Hayward Wisconsin 2000

These are a few pics of Spider lake and the cabin we stayed in up in northwest Wisconsin near the town of Hayward.  This is a very clear lake.  There is very little algae or mud in the water.  In fact it is so clear, you can see the bottom in as much as eight feet of water.  Most of the lake is pretty shallow, running between 5-12 feet.  However, there are many areas where the depth exceeds 20 feet.  It is 65 feet deep in the north end of the lake.  Pine trees and white birch line most of the shoreline as most of the lake's shore is uninhabited.  Bass, panfish, walleye, musky, and perch reside in the lake.  There are no northern pike in this lake.  The muskies keep most of the panfish small, although there are some decent crappies caught sometimes.  I caught a 32" 10-15lb female musky in 1998 in this lake.  Unfortunately I didn't have a digital camera then so I can't post a pic on here.   There have been much larger muskies caught here.  This year, I caught a very large walleye.  See below for details.

These are a few pictures of my trophy walleye I caught just this year (June 2000).  The fish measured 23 inches long and weighed six pounds.  I caught it in about 15 feet of water fairly early in the morning.  I was using a Frenzy crankbait, cranking over some weed tops near a steep dropoff.  It seems that most of the larger fish in this lake like to hang near steep dropoffs with weedbeds present.  Everyone wanted me to get the fish mounted, but I decided to let it go and just take lots of pictures.  Maybe someone else can catch it right?  Well, now I kind of regret it even though the pictures turned out pretty well.  Oh well, that's life!  It was fun to catch though!
