Dear Karina...

In honour of the friend who inspired me to write spontaneous rhymes.

This is like my own version of Seinfeld - prose about absolutely nothing except what is happening right now.

Most of the pieces are rhymes I've used to sign off emails. Some are little notes I've written to friends. Others are actually rap lyrics I wrote for my Theatre Sports team intro.

My ROTA (Rotaract Officers Training Assembly) Poem.

27 Jul 1997

Who are we? Let's see, now where the squeeze,
That grabs yur heart, brings you to your knees,
What you thought was a pain in your back,
Really means that you're having a heart attack!

You can't hide 'cause we're inside
Your chest, do your best to keep your pride,
So here we are - introducin'
Myo-Cardial Infarction!

Which niche is a ditch?
Hint: Scitech distortion....

My answer to this riddle: A niche in a room standing on its side is a ditch (if its now under your feet.

3 Nov 1997

Keeping in touch whilst burning the clutch....

5 Nov 1997

Mishin' and a mashin' in a groovy sort of fashion...

5 Nov 1997

Q: What time does the bus leave?
A: Never. because its an evergreen.

Mind you, this joke would probably only work in Perth where the public transport buses all have a green stripe along them.

5 Nov 1997

That's very clever,
How you can sever
a phrase with a pause,
and then omit the clause.

The latest news from the guy with big shoes....

5 Nov 1997

The system may swallow all your mail
But determined people never bail.
Dealing with every calamity
Its that enigmatic guy, GT.

5 Nov 1997

I was watching the screen as I hit those keys,
when a mail arrived from overseas.
Woke me up when it made a beep.
I had been day-dreaming too deep.

"See the 'C' key?"
"You mean 'E'," said he.
"No. Go to 'O'
And stop at the top."

I'm having too much fun with this...

Farewell, for now, to you, fair maiden,
For it is, with work, that I, am laden.
When I return, I'll try to earn,
Your circumspect trust and respect.

Giving you a clue that I like you...

7 Nov 1997

Study for exams is over.
Need the luck of four-leafed clover.
Though I might get quite a score
I think I could have gotten more.

12 Nov 1997

Takin a likin' to goin' out hikin'...

26 Nov 1997

Time to make like a tree....And burn rubber (if its that sort of tree).

Another class, another dance,
Representing a romance
'Tween dancer and viewer,
Hoping it'll endure.

28 Nov 1997

How goes the day?
More successful than a soufle?

Another busy weekend.
Time to be with friends.
Can anything slow the pace of life,
When enjoyment is rife?

19 Dec 1997 Friday afternoon but still no moon,
Yet rise it will as surely as in June,
For such events people wait,
congregate and concentrate.

"Observe!" they thought when they built their house,
Built in honour of their spouse,
Stars celestine, Mars tangerine,
And the moon as somewhere man has been.

We've left our mark on the surface,
In the search for greater purpose,
When the moon we colonize,
The satellite will have seen our eyes.

Then little shelters will be our home,
Cramped inside sealed dome,
A community will form in the search for more,
Of what the universe has in store.

G'Day!

Just last Monday I returned from S.A.
Now hopefully I'm here to stay
Long enough to get my degree,
For my CV and a larger fee.

Now no such things as a simple lecture,
Just logic and pure conjecture,
Many more hours of work required,
Enough to make a student tired.

Holidays must be over for all you too,
Now you've got other things to do,
Hope you all had some sunny times,
And are now even happier through these rhymes.

17 Mar 1998

There was a wasp who loved to sting,
Inflicting pain was its thing,
Then the wasp saw,
A chance for more,
And now that wasp is in accounting.

31 Mar 1998

Sitting in a lab, network like a crab,
Walls are clean and well just a little drab,
Opera from the walkman on the table,
Music communicating a fable.

Mind is clear for the first time in a while,
No need for cleverness or guile,
Beat the heat with a passionfruit drink,
Dispense with bomber jackets and mink.

Pretty soon I'll be driving home,
Where on the bedhead stands a gnome,
From a moment of joy in my life,
Where I almost met my wife.

31 Mar 1998 Bye from the man with a lack of a tan,
despite a trip to old Egyp'.

27 Apr 1998

Complex directions from diary sections
Time for rhyme...

A tripod sits in the corner of the lab,
Sitting calmly on a slab
Of wooden boxes, all different sizes,
Containing all sorts of surprises.

Tripods have no cares in the world,
Even when handled, moved and twirled,
'Cept to provide stability in life,
Where the user might otherwise be in strife.

Cleverly designed, can be put away
To retrieve and use some other day,
Never complains of overuse,
Wrong operation or plain abuse.

A tripod will ignore all defamation,
Will peacefully hold fast its station,
'Til required in some other place,
To help photograph someone's face.

Who will that next person be?
Whose image will project upon thee?
Concentrated to a point a bit higher,
So an image the camera will acquire.

Though important who in front we'll find,
Also important those behind
The tripod, documeting the now,
So future generations can be endowed.

5 May 1998

Each TS night I set the scene,
With a little rap song to introduce my team,
To get us going, create the hype,
Have a good night, the hilarious type.

Cause screams of laughter in the crowd,
As we play up and they are wowed
by our daggy gags and eloquent lines,
Not like brine our signs are fine.

24 May 1998

I had this dream, about a beam
Of light, in the middle of the night.
We had to go outside, not to hide,
But to find people to build a steeple
To see the light, in the middle of the night.

26 May 1998

The end of the semester is nigh,
I think with a sigh,
And wonder how to plunder,
A score more high.

Since my study has been so cruddy,
I'll have to rely,
On not being under,
A cloud when I try,

To deal with the ordeal,
Of being tested intensely,
If I can avoid a blunder,
I can pass this year safely.

29 May 1998

What's that you said?
We've finished the shed?
There's enough time now,
to be fed,
Time to go out and dine,
Now that we've finished our design.

Tomorrow the ROTA camp begins,
I guess we'll freeze our skins,
At the Byford Mandjedal site,
Where we can at night
Warm ourselves next to campfire flames,
Whilst chatting to the dames.

30 May 1998

We're Rotaract office bearers to be,
We're all one big family,
In Rotaract, we party,
And help the needy, in the community.

We go ta ROTA and promote a
World where we work as a well-oiled motor,
Work together, do heaps of good,
In our neighbourhoods, as we should.

I don't have to, ask you, tell you,
Cause you guys already know
That happiness and love will flow,
Will rise and grow, like kneaded dough.

Through all the efforts we put in,
Through every chocolate wheel we spin,
Ideas and positions we study,
At the R.O. Training Assembly.

23 Nov 1998

The other night I saw this most fantastic dancer on stage,
Gentle as mint yet more potent than mage,
You danced with your friends, you entertained us
An audience of a hundred plus.

You danced enthusiastically,
But those around me didn’t seem to see,
They were too busy with the company
of familiar faces, comraderie.

Your dancing makes me so spun out,
Your skill you should never doubt,
It probably takes you to another plane,
Beyond the mundane.

I guess I’m just one of the blokes,
But if I ever see you again amongst the oaks,
I’ll look again for your shine,
And hope that to it I can add mine.

2 Dec 1998

When you take the stage tonight,
I’ll look for your smile so bright,
Rays that transcend the humble walls
Of your performance hall.

Live, give, be a wonder,
Enchant others with the spell I’m under,
Sparkle like the morning sun as it falls
Upon and then reflects from a waterfall.

Refreshing is the water that flows,
From a source that nobody knows
Except you - As you make me sweat,
And then speak cool words that calm the upset.

I hope to cherish a spirit so pure,
Such that it may endure,
That it may never be dammed,
By an inconsiderste hand.

I shake my head as I write,
Wondering what is and what might,
If only time were more kind,
And you were more than just in my mind.

I call to you, lady blue,
Enlighten me with a clue,
As to where and how,
I might be with you now.

15 Dec 1998

I’ve always loved you as a friend,
Even when I hit a romantic dead end,
When I hurt you I felt bad so I send,
Thoughts to you to make amends.

I hear music and I see you dance,
The two together at every chance,
Your whole body expresses soul,
Pure joy the ultimate goal.

To see you close off to me,
Would gnaw away at my sanity,
I would miss your emotional intensity,
Commitment the key to quality.

Nobody else makes me look at the sky,
The way you do when your spirit flies
Free, a creature of beauty,
As I believe you’ll always be.

You’ve only glimpsed who I am,
But you’ve already seen me get into a jam,
I need you to remove any doubt,
That I’m working hard to find the way out.
