Swamp Sparrow

Latin: Melospiza georgiana / French: Bruant des marais

Coastal Plain Swamp Sparrow, Prime Hook Nat. Wildlife Refuge (see more below about Prime Hook), Milford, DE, Boardwalk Trail, (8/7/05) (kb).  The boardwalk extends into the freshwater marsh along the forest margin.   Flowering Marsh Mallow grow abundantly in the marsh. "Shrub habitats adjacent to wetland areas are critical for breeding and migrating Coastal Plain Swamp Sparrows, a unique subspecies of sparrows found in Delaware."*  wave867
Swamp Sparrow chits, Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, south blind,  8/20/05, 3 pm (53kb). From 5 foot bushes and tall grasses in swamp.

From U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service brochure.  Prime Hook is an excellent birding location for freshwater marsh, spring and fall migration and a wide variety of songbirds and waterfowl.  The staff is very helpful and extremely knowledgeable about this area.
