April 4, 2002, Freak Accident Scars JC for Life
By JC's Mom, Carla Renfroe
Family Headlines
Around 10 o'clock this morning, JC decided to go out bike riding around the neighborhood.  He had asked permission to do this so that we (mom & dad) knew where he was.  He was always good about staying close to home and always tried to keep a watchful eye out on traffic.  But on this day he met with a bit of bad luck.
When he attempted to come to a stop at a stop sign in a busy intersection, his brakes failed placing him in the direct line of oncoming traffic.  Fortunately for JC, the man that hit him was only traveling 35 mph at the time.  The man was driving an older model Chevy Blazer and had stated to local authorities that by the time he seen JC it was too late and that there was no way he could avoid hitting him.
Needless to say, the accident itself scarred JC.  But he
JC's "battle scars" and all 95 stitches.
told us later that his biggest fear was getting into trouble when we (mom & dad) found out what had happened.  He was afraid he would be accused of not stopping on purpose.  But out of that very same fear, he got up from the scene, picked up his bike and proceeded to walk the 4 blocks home.  He got 1/2 block from our apartment when a passer-by stopped him due to his obvious injuries.
The man that hit him had a cell phone and had already called the police and rescue unit to the scene.   Unfortunately, JC had already left the scene by the time they arrived.  The passer-by assisted in finding JC by calling for help on his cell phone as well and by making JC sit down at the side of the road.  And since we lived so close to where JC was stopped, the man was nice enough to come to our door and let us know where JC was.
David got to him first, not saying anything to me until he knew how bad off JC was.  I was still in bed since I had worked midnight shift the night before.  David, of course, woke me up after seeing JC himself and calmly informed me that JC had been in an accident.  Needless to say, my one and only thought and the first thing our of my mouth was "Is he okay?"
When I got to him, I was shocked and thankful at the same time.    He wasn't crying, nor was he in any pain, or so he said.  But he had that obvious look of "Boy am I ever gonna be in trouble over this."  I could hardly believe it when he looked up at me from the ground where he was sitting and asked me if I was mad at him.  "No Baby."  I was just so very thankful that he wasn't hurt any worse than what I could see.  But that was bad enough cause his once white T-shirt now looked like it had gone through a meat grinder where it was all torn up.
At the hospital, the doctor was even in shock.  Mainly because his age and size did not match.  JC at that time was only 14 years old, stood 6 feet tall and weighed in at around 275 lbs.  The doctor told us that this was one time we should be thankful that he was such a big boy, because a smaller kid may not have survived.  JC had no internal injuries and no broken bones.  Just lots of cuts, scratches and road rash and a few bruises.  He ended up with 95 stitches.
December 25, 2002, Family Pet Crashes After Holiday Celebrations     By Carla Renfroe
After a big morning helping everyone open their gifts, including his own and an even bigger afternoon enjoying a nice Christmas Turkey Dinner/Birthday Dinner, Moxey P. Pirate, our little Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, made time for a "long winters' nap."  The poor little feller was completely worn out and slept in that same spot for nearly 2 hours that afternoon.
Christmas Day is always a big day for him since it marks the day that we found him underneath our house, so you could also say it's his birthday too.  And he always knows it's getting time for his birhtday when we start putting up the Christmas decorations.  He's just like one of the kids, always snooping to see if he can find his gift under the tree.
A Christmas nap for Moxey.
