    Why a doula?

    A Birth Doula...

    • Understands the physiology of birth and the emotional needs of a woman in labour.
    • Assists the woman and her partner in preparing for and carrying out her plans for birth.
    • Provides continuity of care, emotional support, physical comfort measures, an objective viewpoint,
    • Helps the woman and her partner obtain information they need to make good decisions.

Women have complex needs during childbirth. In addition to the safety of modern obstetrical care, and the love and companionship provided by their partners, women need consistent, continuous reassurance, comfort, encouragement and respect. They need individualized care based on their circumstances and preferences. The role of the Doula encompasses the non-clinical aspects of care during childbirth. The comfort and reassurances offered by the Doula are beneficial regardless of whether or not the woman chooses pain medication. How will hiring a Doula help?

Studies indicate that when a Doula is present, labours tend to be shorter with less need for technical aid, and there is greater maternal satisfaction. This provides a more relaxed postpartum environment and enhances early mother - infant relationships, breast feeding and family adjustments.

      A Birth Doula...
    • does not replace the woman's partner or care providers.
    • does not make decisions for, or speak instead of, her clients. She does not project her own values and goals onto her client, or discourage the woman from her choices.
    • does not perform clinical or medical tasks such as taking blood pressure or temperature, fetal heart tones, vaginal exams or postpartum clinical care

    What do we provide?

Since we are a group comprised of people working independently, we all provide various services. Most doula's working with doula c.a.r.e. will provide:

    • A few prenatal visits, to discuss your options, and help keep you informed about your birth.
    • They will stay with you throughout your entire labour and birth.
    • Provide you with a backup doula from the Doula C.A.R.E. group to ensure continuity.
    • Postpartum visits to check in, and help you with breast feeding, and referal if needed to a postpartum doula.

Some doulas working in the Guelph/Fergus chapter of Doula C.A.R.E. have been trained in other work that may be helpful to you during your pregnancy and birth. A doula will never use methods she is not trained or knowledgable in, and will discuss all practice before it's use with the client.

Some services our doula's offer are:

    • Multi lingual. Including: Spanish, ASL, Signed English, and French.
    • Massage Therapy.
    • Use of a rebozo.
    • Reiki.
    • Prenatal and Postpartum Yoga.
    • Pelvic Mapping
    • Belly Mapping
If there's something you're interested in, and it's not listed above, just ask! We may be able to point you in the right direction in the Guelph/Fergus community!

    Where do we work?

This will also depend on the doula that is right for you. Some of our doula's are willing to travel some distance to attend to a client, while others are restricted to working in Guelph or Fergus. Your doula will be upfront with you about her limitations to work in your area, and can help you find someone else should she be unavailable.
