Snowslide Gulch is located just past Keystone Canyon on the left side going out of town. On the left (northwest) side of the Richardson Highway at mile 15.49, Snowslide Gulch itself is a large and very active avalanche chute collecting snow from thousands of feet above. The Snowslide Gulch area extends from the gulch to the Lowe River bridge at mile 16.40, and includes six climbs on the bushy hillside seen from the road. The climbs are generally low-angle, non-descript, bushy smears with both substantial approaches and substantial avalanche hazard. However they are good as early season warm-ups for those not wishing to venture out on truly steep ice yet. Besides wading through snow on the approaches and descents, the Lowe River must be crossed, either by wading across a shallow section or finding a frozen one. |
Mile 15.50 left side of the highway Killer Death Fang Falls II 150' This climb is visible on the right (northeast) side of the main avalanche chute of Snowslide Gulch, several hundred feet above the river and in the path of one of the tributary chutes. It is steep, and noticably narrower at the top than at the bottom. Mile 15.59 left side of the highway Low Tech II 175' This climb is the most leftward smear/gully on the low bench to the right of Snowslide Gulch. Mile 15.60 left side of the highway No Reason III 220' This climb is located on the low bench to the right of Low Tech and below High Tech. Rappel from alders to descend. |
Mile 15.60 left side of the highway High Tech II 400' This climb is located to the right of Low Tech and above No Reason. It is a low-angle, somewhat alder infested route with some soft snow and high quality ice climbing (when in condition). The descent is down-climbing because rappel anchors are scarce. Mile 15.70 left side of the highway Porcelain Cobweb II 450' This climb is located to the right of No Reason and High Tech and consists of moderate, diaphanous ice not often visible from the road. Descend via alder slopes to the right. Mile 15.75 left side of the highway Fa II 450' This climb is located to the right of Porcelain Cobweb and is often covered by unconsolidated, cruddy snow. Descend on right, by rappel. |
