and the Mahavishnu Orchestra.

 These are rudimentary "one-finger" chords.
 Second G Ma7 in cycle may be {GMa7/A}  = {A 9 Sus4}

Note the use of D Major R_2_3_5_6_Oct_9 ...pentatonic pattern,
first soloing over both chords adding to 
the G Major bars a 2_3_5_6_7_9 scalar flavour (G tonic-less,at that).
Then McLaughlin adds the scalar 7th C#, scale tone on G, Lydian #11th.
