Badges and Recognition |
Our unit has been earning some badges from the Girl Recognition System 'Look Wider', as well as doing our own 'Go-For-It' Challenges (name borrowed from Guiding UK). In 2001 most of the girls earnt the 'Fire' Create a Challenge. Their challenges involved finding out about the fire safety equipment in our hall (fire extinguishers, fire blankets, exits, etc), learning the principles behind building a fire, how to light a fire safely and how to put it out. We also had a campfire and sang some fun songs. In Term 4 2002 year all the girls earnt their 'Rope' Create a Challenge as well. Challenges included showing they could tie their shoelaces tightly, learning basic knots like a reef knot and double overhand, tying a reef knot with a jelly snake, and making a plaited friendship bracelet out of wool. We also participated in the Heart Foundation's 'Jump Rope for Heart', and many of the skills the girls learnt through this (including basic skipping, long rope skipping and some rope tricks) went towards the Rope badge as well. In 2003 we did the 'Feet' Create a Challenge, which included walking and other fitness activities, foot massages and relaxation, foot painting, tying shoelaces, etc. In 2004 we did 'Hands', which included 'helping hands', finger painting, feeling different textures, hand painting, etc. In 2005, terms 2 and 3, we have been working on the 'Other People' create a challenge, which includes learning about Guides in other countries, making a gift for someone else, serving food to others, listing to others, learning about community helpers, and thinking about the variety of different appearances that people can have. Girls started working continuously on their 'Go For It' Challenges in 2002. They start on yellow, then move to Green, Blue and Red. After that it's usually time to 'make tracks' to Brownies! The Badge is a 'Create Your Own' Create a Challenge badge, with a bit of coloured ribbon sewn in the middle (yellow, green, blue or red). Click here to see what each challenge involves. |
