MULTI~STEP EQUATIONS
Equation a mathematical sentence that contains an equal sign.
Multi~Step Equation is an equation that involves more than one operation, and to solve; you will need to work backwards.
What does a multi~step equation look like?
How do I solve a multi~step equation?
Problem: Ed May’s and Zac Martin’s Hum’V just broke down and the military won't pay for the repairs. They don’t want to pay more than a $100 for the total cost of repairs. Monroe Muffler told them that the service call would cost $35, and an additional $20 for each hour. What is the maximum number of hours that the guy, who is going to rip them off, can work on the Hum’V, and keep the cost at $100?
EXPLORE: First you must find a variable.
Let "h" equal the total number of hours.
Information: $35 = service call charge
$20 = fee per hour ----> 20h = Total hourly fee. (20 dollars times the number of hours)
$100 = total cost
PLAN:
Service Call Charge + Total Hourly Fee = Total Cost ----> 35 + 20h = 100
SOLVE:
35 + 20h -35 |
= |
100 -35 |
Tip: Always subtract the number with no variable by itself and then subtract that number from the other side of the equal sign. |
0 + 20h |
= |
65 |
Additive Identity (Adding zero doesn't change the value) |
20h /20 |
= |
65 20 |
Tip: Divide the variable term by it's coefficient (the number before the variable) |
h |
= |
3.25 |
Coefficient is cancelled out. |
Since h = 3.25, then the answer to the question is 3.25 hours or 3 hours and 15 minutes.
CHECK:
Substitute the answer back into the variable in the original problem.
Remember h = 3.25 and 35 + 20h = 100
35 + 20(3.25) |
= |
100 |
(20 x 3.25 = 65) |
35 + 65 |
= |
100 |
(35 + 65 = 100) |
100 |
= |
100 |
