This issue was raised as all 5 of the Gundam Pilots at sometime during the series decided to self-destruct or contemplate about self-destruction at least once. After several analysis of their various situations, the following theory has been established. Apparently, the reasons why the 5 pilots self-destructed are quite different:

For Heero: Can't take the pain of the SPANDEX, therefore self destruction was the only solution. (see more about those pants here)

For Duo: He had nothing else better to do at the time.

For Trowa: Realizing he can't make any money from being a clown, he got tired with life.

For Quatre: Realized that his father donated all his assets to charity, not giving Quatre one cent! After losing billions in a law-suit, Quatre sees no point in life...

For Wu-Fei: Don't have any companions. So lonely... you get the idea.
