Courtney Love says she tried to make her recent drugs overdose "fun" for her 11-year-old daughter.

The Hole singer was arrested earlier this month after becoming violent outside a house in Los Angeles.

Hours after she was released by police, she fell ill from an accidental overdose of the narcotic OxyContin.

Love, 39, said her daughter Frances Bean made her green tea as they waited at their Beverly Hills home for an ambulance to arrive.

"That's the only time my daughter has ever, ever, ever pitched in on one of my little crises," Love said.

"I made it fun. I said it was going to be gross and I was going to have to make myself throw up but it was going to be OK," she told People magazine's November 3 edition.

Days later Frances was put in the care of Cobain's mother Wendy O'Connor and a bitter custody battle has since erupted.

Love said: "I'm not on some downward spiral. I'm not on narcotics. I'm fine. I just want my daughter back."

In another interview, Love revealed the battle for Frances was becoming increasingly hostile.

Love has enjoyed a good relationship with O'Connor since Cobain shot himself in 1994 but it soured after her arrest.

-- Courtney Love appeared in juvenile court on Thursday (October 16), to try and convince a judge that she is fit to care for her child, according to E! Online. Frances Bean Cobain, the 11-year-old daughter of Love and late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, was taken from Love and placed in the custody of her paternal grandmother, after Love was arrested for being under the influence of a controlled substance on October 2. No decision was reached at Thursday's hearing. Love was seen trying to enter the home of former boyfriend Jim Barber when L.A. police arrested her. A few hours after she posted bail and was released, Love was reportedly hospitalized for an alleged overdose of the painkiller OxyContin. Love was quoted in the New York Daily News as saying that on October 10, she was admitted against her will to Las Encinas Hospital in Pasadena, California. Authorities were reportedly concerned that she planned to kill herself, and admitted her under a Californian law--the infamous "5150"--that allows authorities to hold individuals considered to be a danger to themselves or others for a 72-hour period. Love claims she was joking about suicide, saying, "Yes, I was changing my will that week...I left a message that was like, 'I want to die, I want to jump off the Empire State Building.'" But she said authorities took her seriously. She spent 24hours at Las Encinas, according to the Daily News, before walking out and reportedly asking people in private residences for help. She claims a man in a guitar store finally drove her home. Love faces up to a year in jail on the drug charges. Her arraignment is scheduled for October 31. Her first solo album, America's Sweetheart, was due out on October 28, but has been pushed back to a February 10, 2004, release

Love faces drug charges

AFP - United States rocker-actress Courtney Love has been charged with being under the influence of drink or drugs, after she was arrested by police who responded to a report of a burglary, prosecutors said.

Love, 39, was due to appear in court in Los Angeles on a charge of being under the influence of a controlled substance, stemming from her October 2 arrest, the prosecutors said.

"Miss Love is scheduled for arraignment tomorrow," Frank Mateljan, of the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office, told AFP.

The widow of grunge rocker Kurt Cobain was arrested a week ago, after police were called to a suspected burglary in plush Beverly Hills, and found Love standing dazed in the street.

"During the investigation, Miss Love stated she had broken some windows at a nearby home," police spokeswoman Renee Montoya said at the time.

"Officers then contacted the resident of the home, who stated he did not wish to have Miss Love arrested for breaking the windows," she said.

Love was arrested on suspicion of substance abuse.

After being released by police on $US2,500 ($A3,631.08) bail, Love was taken to hospital to be treated for a suspected drug overdose, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Love was married to Cobain, the former lead singer of the group Nirvana when he committed suicide in 1994.

She formed the band Hole, and won a Golden Globe award for her role in 1996 film "The People vs Larry Flynt", which tells the story of the porn publisher, who was a candidate for California governor in this week's recall election.

Police responding to a burglary found Love, 39, standing outside the house and she later admitted having broken four windows in an attempt to enter, Police Lieutenant Art Miller told the Los Angeles Times.

She was arrested on an allegation of being under the influence of a controlled substance and released.

Less than an hour later, Beverly Hills police and paramedics responded to a call for help at a private residence. Love was found at the house and taken to hospital.

Love is the founder of the band Hole, and is the widow of rock star Kurt Cobain.

In April 1994, she was arrested at the Beverly Hills Peninsula Hotel after hotel officials called police to report that they believed one of their guests had overdosed.

Love was treated in hospital but was not charged. Shortly after the incident, she entered a drug rehabilitation centre.

She left when she learned that Cobain, of the rock group Nirvana, had committed suicide.

Her name was among those mentioned in December when a Beverly Hills doctor, Jules Lusman, was stripped of his medical licence in California for prescribing addictive drugs on a cash-and-carry basis to celebrities.
