Plenary Session I
Meta Plan Concept “Orangutan=Umbrella”
Ø By protecting a species, it is expected to be able to conserve the area entirely
Ø Protecting Orangutan means ptotecting Gunung Palung National Park (GPNP)
Ø The picture can be used as GPNP conservation trademark (logogram)
Ø As one of rare species which is protected, Orangutans are expected to be able to be umbrella species for GPNP area
Ø Rescuring efforts are done as early as possible to prevent the extinction of species in GPNP
Ø Optimizing Orangutans issue in GPNP conservation
Ø Conserving is needed for all of ecosytems which are in the umbrella ptotection (GPNP area)
Ø Orangutan as one of important protection in Gunung Palung can be used as conservation mode i.c. the GPNP conservation itself
Ø Behind the umbrella, there are Orangutans as key species of other species
Problems
Formulation, Strategies, and Solutions (Action Plan) of Gunung Palung National
Park Conservation Handling
The Problems, Strategies, and Solutions in Making Efforts of Conservation of GPNP Area From Social, Economic, and Cultural Aspects
The Problems:
Ø There are shifting cultivation/swidden agriculture actions
Ø There are society conviction about zone authority in connection with shifting cultivation/swidden agriculture action tradition/culture
Ø The culture of society which is attached by the forest
Ø High economic pressures make the cut down of trees illegally action be the only alternative job for the people around it
Ø There is no initiative from regional government to find an effort which is able to increase the people’s income
Ø Low ability of analysis of society so that it’s difficult to make new innovation from outside
Ø The level of education really influences in choosing/determining the steps or action which are going to be done
The Problem
Crystallization:
1. The role of the society promoter/local institution is not optimum yet in increasing society resources (village intelectual promoter, religions officials, and customary officials)
2. Low ability to analyze (unadeguated formal/informal education)
3. The policy of regional developing which is centralistic, project oriented, not efficient (not suitable with the condition of surrondings potention) and not be supported by a policy in order the program can be done condusively
4. Minimum access of information about the business oppurtunity from and for the society
The Solution:
1. - optimize the role of local institution
- give any chances and beliefs
- facilities in digging traditional wisdom
2. - facilitate the activity of awareness about the situation and potention to face future challange
- give training and assistancing
- apprentice or comperative study
3. – giving facilities in order the people’s needs can be shared until distribute them to connected outsider
- whatever the activites development are done, it must be based on the surroundings potention
4. Conecting the people with market
The Concrete Steps:
- support society participation in determining future priority activities
- collective planning until monitoring and valuating
3. There is follow up of information after workshop

The
Problems, Strategies, and Solutions In Making Efforts of
GPNP
Conservation From Networking and Fundrising Aspect
1). Networking
Ø Institution/Student’s Institution/NGO run by theirown (unintegrated)
Ø Clarify and reinforce the role and responsibility
Ø Cofusion of information about program in GPNP
Ø Involve all stakeholders who are concerned with GPNP
Ø Fuction as pressure group
Ø Fuction as mode of information
Ø Policy consilidation from stakeholders
Ø Accommodating work programmes in GPNP
Ø Facilitating funrising
Ø There is the same perception/goal from involved stakeholders
Ø Nerworking of GPNP conservation area
Ø Forming consortium
2). Fundrising
Ø Limited fund
Ø Lack of information about fund sources
Ø Less pro-active
Ø The existance of fund for conservation
Ø The existance of fund sources for conservation
Ø The existance of Harvard and LTFE
Ø The existance of an international NGO in Indonesia
Ø The existance of some firms around the GPNP
Ø Identity and invent benefactors/investors
Ø Open networking to the benefactors
Ø Make extension of making proposals which are worth to be sold and procedures in fund rising

Make the formulation of the counterpart concept with reference from LIPI |
The Benefit of Research
Ø For science
Ø Give information to the outsiders who have interest in research
Ø As the base frame of policy and the aplication
