CAR-15 REVIEW

MODIFICATIONS continued....

In order to make to make the firing position natural, I needed to make the firer's eye level higher. Luckily, CARROT just released a cheek comb, designed for the M4 or XM. Yet with a bit of filing, (thanks Papabear) it could be made to fit the CAR-15 or A1.
The Cheek comb itself, is pretty expensive for just a pice of rubber, but it is certainly a good accessory for this type of AEG. Simply place your cheek on the comb and your eye is at the correct hieght to scope out the target. My own CAR 15 is set up to allow good eye relief with the stock in it's shortest position. Yet, most commercially available mounts would require you to set it up for "full length shooting."

To make the gun good for NIGHT GAMES, I mounted a BEAMSHOT 1000S laser ontop of the scope. A 30" extension pressure switch was added to the pistol grip. This is set up to be spot on at around 20m, further away, the dot is lower than the crosshairs, so taking into account the "lob shot" factor. Allowing HITS out to around 4om without aiming high.

Also spotting that a cheap rubberised grip was available, I ordered one after being impressed with the VEDA MP5 version (as seen on PAPABEAR's MP5K). Mounting it required taking the motor out (OK as I was fitting a 1000 anyway). The grip was removed and ARALDITE added before the overgrip was added. Leaving it to set 12 hours, I then replaced the parts.

The grip vastly improves the comfort of the gun and is moulded to fit your hand. Indeed holding the gun with 1 hand is possible (despite the weight).

I looked at the range of magazines available for the M16 and decided to avoid the 300 series (even though the classic Army copy wa cheap enough) opting to buy 3 extra 190 high capacity mags instead. Also noticing the TOP DRUM MAG, I decide that for around £30 it was worth a look, after being impressed by the MP5 version.

Loading up the magazine, I am pretty sure it holds far more than the 1000 BB's that is suggested. Indeed I reckon it holds in excess of 1500 rounds. With this fitted, I can play a speedball or assault game without fear of running out of pellets.
Cutting a wooden block to fit between 2 magazines, proved ideal for the 190 magazines. They are mounted facing opposite directions, so that the spare magazine is always on the right hand side of the gun. I carry 1 pair (with spacer) and 2 singles in my pockets. Only using the DRUM on Speedball or specific FIREFIGHT TASKS.

PAINT SCHEME:

To make the gun easier to cam up, I decided to spray paint several areas of the AEG. Firstly, I removed the front grips and Stock, spraying them with a BRITSH RACING GREEN (BRG) Aerosol available from any motor shop.
Then, I sprayed the the magazines, drum, cheek comb and muzzle with an acrylic OLIVE GREEN 2 produced by TAMIYA and available at model shops.
THE FUTURE?
In the future, I may buy a silencer or XM muzzle to try and deaden the "crack" produced by the gun at present. The battery maybe uprated but only to reduce bulk, perhaps an 8.4v 1500mah (STYER/M60) pack could be fitted.

I have considered fitting M4 style grips to the CAR15, thus allowing the external battery to be mounted ontop of the grips rather than below. The only other possibilities would include swapping the chassis over from an M4, thus making the CAR-15 field strip and have removable carry handle. Indeed it would be a hybrid of 16's and M4's.
