Okay, here is the deal. This is not a game of amateur sportsmanship amongst schools. It is a business. So, I ask you what other highly successful business (yes I compare UNC basketball to a top business) would allow such shoddy results? None. No company or business would take what Coach Guthridge has given us. He would be fired, asked to resign or accept another position. So, this abuse that he takes from the fans is acceptable. Anyone, who supports Carolina basketball has the right to voice a complaint. They are the ones who support the program through merchandise, tickets, student fees, and/or like me contribute to the program(and it is not that much). They are still loyal fans to the program.
Would anyone who invests in mutual funds let their funds manager continue to invest with your money after he/she has done poorly for two years? I hope the answer would be a resounding NO. Well, Carolina has invested this year in five McDonald All-Americans and another on the bench(Ronald Curry). Can anyone name another school who starts five McDonald All-Americans. If you guessed Cincinnati, Duke, Temple, Michigan State or Kentucky you are wrong. UNC is the only school to start five. That is a poor return on an investment.
The Tar Heels are expected to win year in and year out. So, it is assumed that the current regime under the sixty-two year old head coach has failed. His staff and himself has driven a proud program into the dirt. It is filled with players who only show emotions only when watching wrestling at the Smith Center(Kris Lang) and under-aged drinkers at night clubs(Will Johnson). I have followed Carolina basketball closely for almost seventeen years. I have never ever seen anything like this. The 89-90 season was the worst before this season, but the players(Lynch, Hubert Davis, Rick Fox etc.) played with emotion even beating number one seeded Oklahoma before getting drilled by Arkansas in the sweet sixteen. This team lacks leadership from cadre to soldier and no one seems to even care.
So, I agree with Clemson when they move out a football coach. They have tasted the blood of success(for years they were the top football team in the South). It is acceptable for them to want to get back to the state of success they once enjoyed(defeated BYU in the '81 Orange Bowl for their only national championship). They understand that major college sports is a business and they are trying to return to that state. The only thing Carolina fans are asking for is a new coach to the right the ship. That is the reason why we have great sites like this one..
