GUTTER QUEENS

When I first glanced at the promotional information for the GUTTER QUEENS, I drew the immediate conclusion that a raging toothache awaited me. Convinced that they were complete bubblegum, I braced myself as I pushed the play button. I certainly was not prepared for the delightful, punky flavour that emanated from the speakers.

The first track TEENAGE WASTELAND is a wild blend of the RAMONES and Glam Metal, topped off with Ziggy Stardust make-up, big hair and sleazy costumes. GET GLAMED WITH ROCK'N'ROLL, the second track, has more of a metal feel to it and really displays the backing vocals. The GUTTER QUEENS have a very raw feel to their music, which lends a certain edginess.

Elvira Tarantella and her skill with the skins is an absolute delight. I'm always very interested when I see a female drummer, especially one that can truly play. Women have long since been a minority in this area, and Tarantella shows that she's definitely got the chops. Throw in Sarah Mephïsta Memphïs and Zygi the Wild One's guitar riffs, Calmo Sideburn's bass licks and Jim Juvenile's belting vocals and you have yourself one hell of a raw, glam slam sleasze punk band!
