America's first official combat pilots of African descent, the Tuskegee Airmen, will be the subject of the monthly special event at The Air Museum Planes of Fame on the Chino Airport on Saturday, February 1, 2003.

The event will begin at 10 am with a seminar featuring veteran Tuskegee Airmen and, weather permitting, conclude with a flying display of the Planes of Fame Curtiss P-40N Warhawk, one of the fighter plane types flown by the Tuskegee Airmen in combat.
Although today's U.S. military services are all fully integrated, during World War II Americans of African descent generally served in segregated units and, for a time, an assumption held by many was that they lacked the ability to operate sophisticated combat equipment such as airplanes.

However, as an experiment, a group of Black Americans did begin training as fighter pilots in Tuskegee, Alabama in 1942 and began combat operations over North Africa in 1943 flying P-40 Warhawks as part of the 79th Fighter Group which was otherwise manned by whites.
In due course, an entire black fighter group incorporating the 99th Fighter Squadron, the 332nd Fighter Group was formed for combat service in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations.
Known as "The Fighting Red Tails" because the tails of their fighter planes were painted red for unit identification, the Tuskegee Airmen went on to establish an enviable combat record that helped to insure the eventual integration of the entire U.S. military.
The Air Museum Planes of Fame is open every day, except Christmas and Thanksgiving, from 9 am until 5 pm.
Admission is $8.95 for adults, $1.95 for youngsters 11 and under and free for accompanied children under five.
The Air Museum Planes of Fame also has a membership program available to the public.
Museum members are entitled to visit The Air Museum Planes of Fame and attend any of its special events throughout the year at no additional cost beyond the initial membership fee.
They also receive discounts in the museum's gift shop and the museum's quarterly newsletter and are eligible to take part in warbird demonstration flights in exchange for supporting donations.
At each special event, members in attendance, including last-minute sign-ups, are eligible to take part in raffles in which the prizes will be free warbird demonstration flights.
