Mike And TJ's Project Background: This lab reflects what we have learned about horizontal and angled projectile motion. 1. Equations for launching at an angle: 1. delta x = Vi(cos theta)t 2. Vx = Vi(cos theta) = constant 3. delta y = Vy (sin theta) + -1/2gt 4. Vyf = Vi (sin theta) - gt 5. V2yf=Vt2sin2 theta - 2g delta y 2. Equations for launching an object horizontally: 1. delta y = -1/2gt2 2. Vy = -gt 3. V2yf = -2g delta y Objectives: Access the characteristics and the path of objects projected at an angle. Materials: Projectile launcher(paintball gun), pen caps(dry erase markers), string(50 yards), protractor, and a stopwatch Location: TJ’s House Procedure: 1. Put on safety goggles. (This is very important!!) 2. Adjust projectile launcher stand to 45 degrees. 3. Load paintball marker. 4. Place paintball marker on the projectile stand. 5. Clear the area in front of the paintball marker. 6. Don't fire if anyone is near you. 7. Yell out, ''FIRING!'' 8. Countdown from one. (''1-2-3-Fire'') 9. Fire a total of three times at this angle. 10. Record the distances and air time for each trial. 11. Repeat steps 1-10 using angles of 30, 60, and 75 degrees. The lab was a good way of learning about projectile motion. It taught us how to figure out the distance, time, and maximum height of an object that flies at an angle or horizontally. For the three trials of 60 degrees we got 10.35m., 8.32m., and 9.35m. We got times of 4.1 s, 3.43 s, and 3.8 s. For the three trials of 45 degrees, we got the distances of 11.06 m., 11.09 m, and 12.22 m. We got times of 2.8s, 2.75s, and 3.49s. For the trials of 30 degrees we we got distances of 13.2m, 14.11m, and 11m. The times we got for the three trials were 2.59s, 1.85s, and 1.14s. The trials we did for 75 degrees we got distances of 2.32m, 4.26m, and 5.16m. The times we got for that angle was 2.29s, 3.49s, and 2.72s. The last trial we did was horizontal. The paintball gun was 1.12 meters off the ground when we shot it. The distances we got for that angle was 11.19m, 8.28m, 10.25m, and 10.14m. The times we got for that angle was 1.3s, 1.4s, 1.53s, and2.09s. We could have gotten wrong times from the accepted value by the timekeeper who was keeping track of the stopwatch because it was hard to tell when the pen cap actually dropped on the pavement. The angles of the gun could also have an effect on our data. We could have held it too low or too high, the possibilities are endless.
