About Zelzate
Zelzate is a community, in the north of the Flanders. The map on the right is the oldest map where Zelzate is mentioned.  The river you see is the Schelde. At the right is the city Antwerp. You find Zelzate below, left of the middle  The sea reached Zelzate via the outlet of the Schelde. The Schelde is a river  that rises in France. In France it encounters the cities Cambrai and Valenciennes. Afterwards the Schelde  streams in Belgium at the cities Tournay, Oudenaarde, and Gent. There it bows to the east to the city of Antwerpen. In the north of Antwerpen the Schelde enters the Netherlands.
Zelzate means Salt City. In the first millenium the regions were very poor. Many times there were inundations. And the Vikings were not far away.
Left from Zelzate you see the swamps. In the Middle Ages, the people makes a living from the peat.
In the XVIth century, the region was sometimes taken by the Spanish, sometimes by the rebels of Willem van Oranje.
If you take a recent map the landscape is altered. Now there is more land then sea.
Zelzate now lives from the industry. The greatest employer is the steel industry.
