The trip was almost over, but it would be a while before we were back in the states.  Some of the American delegates had stayed in Japan to either travel a little more or to get ready for a year abroad studying.  We flew back to the states on Korean Air again which was nice and we had a layover in Seoul for a few hours.  Most of that time was spent eating or napping.  I think I did a bit of both.  We were flying back to Hawaii where we would go our separate ways from there.

Once we arrived in Hawaii, I remember feeling rather mucky.  We arrived sometime in the late morning or early afternoon, and my flight wasn’t until 8 that night.  Since I was one of the last 3 or 4 people to catch a flight I was able to say goodbye to everyone as they left.  I think that the last two people that I said goodbye to were Athena and Lakisha.  I boarded my plane and was finally on my way back home.

Of course it wasn’t a direct flight; no that would be too easy.  I had to sit through a 3-hour layover at LAX.  So I guess I can say I’ve been to California, but I never left the airport.  Finally at about 7 in the morning I boarded my flight back to Newark Airport, however this was probably the most uncomfortable flight I’ve ever been on.  All those stories that you hear people tell you about being placed next to the most obnoxious person imaginable with as little room as possible happened to me.  This was by far the most irritating flight I had been on the entire time I was away.  I tried to sleep through the flight but the guy next to me kept saying “LAX,” not L.A.X. mind you, it sound like he was craving exlax or something.  When the plane landed I couldn’t wait to get off the plane and finally head home to my own bed.  Of course I would be denied this privilege as well.

Once I got off the plane I was greeted at the gate by my mother, father and brother.  I was happy to see them, but at the same time I was exhausted.  I slept most of the car ride and when I did wake up I found that we weren’t heading home.  Instead we were heading out to Noyack, Long Island where my parents were on vacation.  I really wanted to go home and sleep but this was just as good I suppose.  In fact I think that I slept for the next 14 hours trying to recover from my jet lag.  In total I think that I spent over 30 hours traveling from Japan back home, and most of that time was spent awake on a plane.  I was awake most of the time in the airport terminals as well so I bet that didn’t help.

I had much more to do in the week or two before school started again, and I was working on pure adrenaline at some points, but the trip was definitely worth it.  Because of my time spent in Japan, I refocused my studies on what I really enjoyed, and wound up getting a degree in East Asian Languages and Area Studies (concentration in Japanese).  I’m thankful to the people that gave me the chance to go on the conference, and I know that it wasn’t a mistake.  I would recommend to people in college to apply to the conference if they have an interest in Japan.  It gave me insight into what I wanted to do and allowed me to meet some great people.  So go out there and apply, it couldn’t hurt.
