EXPERIMENT # 1

TASTE TEST

PROBLEM:

1.To determine which brand of cola is personally preferred (Pepsi, Coke, Brand "X").

2.To determine which brand of cola is preferred by the class.

HYPOTHESIS:

The brand of cola I will personally prefer in a blind taste test is while the brand preferred by the majority of the class will be .

APPARATUS AND MATERIALS:

3 paper cups labelled "A", "B", and "C"2 soda crackers

One sample each of colas "A", "B", and "C"

PROCEDURE:

1.Obtain three paper cups. Label "A", "B", or "C" and mark a line up from the bottom of each cup as instructed sufficient to hold about 20 mL of liquid.

2. Pick up samples of Cola "A". Cola "B", and Cola "C" in the appropriate cups.

3.Pick up 2 soda crackers.

4.Take a small sip of Cola "A". Swish it around in your mouth carefully and slowly swallow it. On a scale of 1-10 (where 1 = strongly dislike and 10 = strongly like) rate this cola and enter the result in the Data Table.

5.Eat one soda cracker to take away the taste of the first cola.

6.Repeat Procedure steps #4 and #5 for the other two colas.

7.Carefully observe the samples of each cola for colour, amount of bubbles, and any other visible differences. Enter these observations in the Data Table.

OBSERVATIONS AND DATA:

1.Record your personal observations in a Data Table similar to the following.

TABLE I: PERSONAL COLA DATA

2.Copy the class results into a class data table and calculate the average rating of each cola.

AVERAGE

EXPERIMENT #1: TASTE TEST PAGE 2Notebook Page E

DISCUSSION:Answer the following questions in complete sentences.

1.Rank the three colas in order of your personal preference from best to worst.

2.Rank the three colas in order of preference from best to worst based on the class average.

3.Compare your personal results with those of the class by stating similarities and/or differences in order of preference, which ever is appropriate.

4.Supposed that it is proposed that the class results are representative of the results that would be obtained for the community as a whole.

a.Do you agree or disagree with this proposal ? Copy the following as your answer.

"I that the class results are representative of the results that would be obtained in the community as a whole."

b.Suggest at least two reasons why this proposal might be correct.

c.Suggest at least two reasons why this proposal might not be correct.

5.From an analysis of your personal results what relationship if any is there between the colour and amount of bubbles in a cola and its taste ?

6.What other senses and/or other factors can have an influence on a person's perceived taste of colas ?

7.All students tasted the colas in the same order.

a.If the order of tasting had been changed would the results have been affected ? Why or why not ?

b.Suggest how the procedure of the experiment could have been altered to control this variable.

8.BONUS QUESTION:

The procedure used in this experiment is called a "blind test" and is similar to that used in medical studies to test the effectiveness of drugs that relieve symptoms of disease. However medical studies to be considered valid usually use "double blind" tests.

From your own research state what is meant by a "double blind" test.

CONCLUSION:

Answer the following in complete sentences after the identity of the three colas has been revealed.

State your judgement of the two original hypotheses and write a conclusion statement that answers the two original problems.

SOURCES OF ERROR:

Instrumental:None

Procedural:List factors that we were unable to control but that might affect the results.
