To Hannah Jo

Sweet little baby,
so precious and small,
I never got to know you at all.
I never held you in these waiting arms.
Somehow,
I failed to protect you from harms.
I never smoothed your soft, downy hair.
You were gone before
I even knew you were there.
No sunshine kissed freckles
onto your nose.
I never counted your fingers and toes.
No hours rocking you
softly to sleep,
No whispered secrets
for you to keep.
No little fingers
wrapped around mine,
No long eyelashes,
no big blue eyes shine.
I never heard you laughing in joy.
You never had even one little toy.
I never wiped the tears from your eyes.
My baby is silent…
but your mother cries.
I never was able to touch you, baby,
But you must know that you have touched me.
Your life was a flicker
in the vastness of time,
And, just for a flicker,
baby, you were mine.
Like a dream or a wish
on some far away star,
You are wanted and loved,
wherever you are.
God’s angels will watch you
in heaven above
And wrap you in the warmth
of God’s holy love.
I miss you, I love you,
I know there will be
A day I will come find
you waiting for me.
So, til then, sweet baby,
I have work to do.
But when I get to heaven,
I’ll finally meet you.
