Breeds of Guinea Pigs in Australia
There are many breeds in Australia, they are divided up into sections. These are Coarse Coat/ Coat Type, Self, Crested, Satin, Longhair, Ticked and Marked.
Coat Type
These include Rex, Abyssinian and Sheba mini Yak. They can be shown in any colour, it doesn't count for any of the points.
Self
Selfs are a short hair, smooth coated piggy in one colour only. There are Black, Pink Eyed & Dark Eyed White, Cream,  Beige, Lilac, Buff, Golden in DE and PE, Slate, Red, Chocolate and Saffron. Rare varieties are shown under Any Other Colour.
Crested
Satin
Satins have hollow hair shafts giving them a reflective look about them. It is possible for satins to appear in EVERY breed including Longhairs and Coarsecoats. Some are easier to breed and to find than others. Then there's Satin Coarsecoats, where it would be extremely hard to have them to show as Satins are very soft, yet Coarse-coats must be coarse, as required in the Standards, totally the opposite to the other requirements.
Crested can be selfs or marked. Cresteds have smooth, short hair with a rosette on what I would call their forehead. There are English cresteds - selfs with a crest, Crested Marked - Any marked breed with a crest, most common of them are Crested Himmies, and American Crested where the body is one colour while the crest is white.
Longhairs are gorgeous but take forever to brush and wrap. They come in Shelties, Peruvians, Alpacas, Texel, Coronet.
Longhair
There are several types of the Marked variety. The most popular ones are Chocolate and Black Himalayans, Dalmation, Dutch and Roan. Others are the Tri Colours & Tortoise-shell & White, Magpie, Harlequin, Bi-Colour, Brindle, Sable and these aren't easy to breed therefore, there aren't many out there who breeds them!
Marked
There are two types of Ticked Cavies, Agouti's and Argentes. Between these two, there are about 11 different colours. Argentes have Pink eyes and are quite striking to look at! The most common of the Agoutis are the Golden and Silver Agouti.
Ticked
To see a gorgeous Red Satin Abyssinian go to Cavy Cottage, where there are some great photos of some, plus other great breeds!
