PALERMO
On our first visit to Palermo in 1998, we arrived on the SNAV jetliner from Naples at 10:30 PM.  A very severe storm on the  sea turned a 4 hour crossing into a 5 1/2 hour frightening experience.  Most of the electrical power in Palermo was out and many of its beautiful palm trees were uprooted due to a tornado that had come off the sea....The next day Palermo sparkled in the sunshine.
                                          "Palermo Cathedral"
The cathedral, dedicated to Our Lady  of the Assumption, is located on Corso Vittorio Emanuele, a short distance from the "Quattro Canti" - the historic center of vibrant Palermo. The history of the city can be traced from the different architectural styles of the cathedral.  Begun in 1179, it stands on the site of an ancient basilica, then a mosque.  The remains of Santa Rosalia, the patron saint of Palermo, are kept in the chapel dedicated  to her.

There are many niches found on the city streets  throughout Italy. Here is one I discovered of  Palermo's patron saint.
"S. Rosalia of  Palermo"
