Tonnara delle Scopello |

There were mattanzas of the great tuna held each spring since the 13th century off many coastal towns of Sicily. Due to the technical commercial fishing of the seas today, only one mattanza takes place, near Trapani off the island of Favignana. Scopello's mattanza is no more, but the Tonnara remains. It consists of large buildings that housed the equipment, fish processing, and the cottages used by the fishermen. |

The giant anchors are rusting in the sun. They once held the huge net traps, larger than football fields, that channeled and held the big tuna for the eventual mattanza. |

See this same view of Scopello in the movie "Oceans Twelve" Catherine Zeta-Jones and Brad Pitt walk down to the same spot I painted this great view of the tonnara. |
