India in Australia 2000 | |||||||||||||
First Test Adelaide 10 - 14 December 1999 Australia won the toss and changed their recent tactics by batting first, however, India won the first session by taking 4 for 52. Australia ended their innings on the second day at 441 thanks to a 239 run partnership between Steve Waugh (150) and Ponting (125). BKV Prasad was the most successful of the 7 bowlers used with 3 for 83. India ended the second day at 4 for 123 after recovering from 2 for 9. India were dismissed on the third day for 285 with Tendulkar (61) and Ganguly (60) the backbone of the innings while Warne took 4 for 92. With a first innings lead of 156, Australia ended the third day at 2 for 71 and the game looking over. Unlike the first two tests against Pakistan where control of the ebbed back and forth, Australia never lost control of this test. They declared on the fourth afternoon shortly after tea at 8 for 239 after some better Indian bowling and fielding slowed their run rate with an overall lead of 395 runs. Blewett was the best of the batsmen with 88 while Srinath and Agarkar managed 3 wickets each. By stumps on the fourth day, only 26 overs later India had slumped to 5 for 76 and only rain could save them. However, there was no sign of rain and within an hour on the last morning they were all out for 110 with Ganguly top scoring on 43 and Fleming narrowly missing a hat trick finished with 5 for 30. Second Test Melbourne 26 - 30 December 1999 India won the toss and sent Australia in to bat after rain delayed the start of the test. The decision looked to have paid off early after Australia were 2 for 28. However, Australia recovered and batted through the first two rain and bad light interrupted days to be finally dismissed before lunch on day three with an imposing total of 405 runs. However, the weather interruptions had taken their toll and the test seemed destined for a draw. Slater top scored with 91 while Srinath took 4 for 130. India was in immediate trouble crashing to 3 for 31 before a partial recovery. However, they were dismissed for 238 early on a rain affected day 4. Tendulkar top scored with 52 while for Australia, debutant Brett Lee exploded onto the test scene with 5 for 47. Australia then went about setting a final innings target. They declared at 5 for 208 in the evening session setting a target of 376 with three and a half sessions to play. India did not look like they were interested in winning the test from this point and were dismissed after tea on the final day for 195 with Tendulkar again top scoring with 52. For Australia Fleming, Lee and Mark Waugh each took two wickets. Third Test Sydney 2 - 4 January 2000 India again won the toss and elected to bat to the crowd's delight. The Indian batsmen's body language, however, looked more like a team hoping for a quick end to the series and batted in a similar vein being dismissed for 150 just after the start of play on day two with a run rate of just over two runs per over. McGrath took 5 for 48 and Lee bagged another 4 for 39 while Tendulkar top scored with 45. Australia then batted through the rest of day two and declared after lunch on day three at 5 for 552 with Langer top scoring with 223 for Australia and Srinath taking 2 for 105 being the most successful Indian bowler. India required 402 to make Australia bat again with two and a half days available to the end of the test. However, India crashed to be all out at stumps on day three for 261 with Laxman top scoring on 167 and McGrath taking 5 for 55 for Australia. |
