First Test Mumbai 24 - 26 February 2000 India won the toss and elected to bat, having taken an extra batsman and only four bowlers. After slumping to 2 for 39, India recovered on the back of Tendulkar (97) to post a moderate total of 225 shortly before stumps on the fist day. For South Africa, Kallis secured 3 wickets for 30 runs off 16 overs while Donald bowled with pace and bounce to upset the top order. The South African innings openers batted out the remaining eight overs for 27 runs without loss and continued on day two to post 90 before Tendulkur broke through with the ball. There followed a remarkable batting collapse losing all ten wickets for 86 runs and a total of 176 - a deficit of 49. Gibbs top scored with 50 while India's retiring captain took 3 for 10 off 5 overs and Srinath managed 3 for 45. India were on top at this time and only needed to bat the South Africans out of the game with over half the game time remaining. However, India immediately slumped to 3 for 24 by the time Tendulkar was walking back to the pavilion. By the end of the second day, India has managed 5 for 75 with an overall lead of 124 and a growing sense that this one had "slipped their fingers". The third day found India unable to compile a challenging target for the final South African innings. Losing three wickets on 92 - including a run out - did not help. In the end, Dravid top scored with 37 in a total of 113. Pollock was the chief destroyer taking 4 for 24 off 12.2 overs. South Africa had recovered the balance of power and managed the 163 run target with the loss of 6 wickets. Gibbs was again top scorer with 46 while Kumble managed 4 for 56 off 28 overs. Second Test Bangalore 2 - 6 March May 2000 India again won the toss and elected to bat and again lost early wicket in the first morning. After slumping to 2 for 30, India went on to post an uncompetitive 158 with Kumble unbeaten on 36 shortly before stumps. The bowling honours were shared two a piece between Pollock, Hayward and Boje. The South Africans batted through the second and third days and were finally dismissed for 479 in the fourth morning with a lead of 316 - having batted India out of the test. Kallis (95), Boje (85) and Klusiner (97) formed the backbone of the innings while Kumble returned 6 for 143 off 68 overs. The Indian openers managed to bat through to 47 before Dravid walked toward the pavilion. Kumble made a quick exit one run later and at the end of day four they had posted 196 for the loss of 5 wickets. Still needing 120 runs just to make South Africa bat again, India were clearly hoping for rain. Rain did not come to the rescue as South Africa wrapped the innings up in 18 overs on the final morning. Azharuddin offered the only resistance making 102 in a total of 250, still needing another 71 runs to make South Africa bat again. For South Africa, Boje returned 5 for 83 off 38 overs to claim the bowling honours. |
