First Test Lord's 17 - 21 May 2001 The first day of the Test was completely washed out. On the second morning Pakistan won the toss and elected to field. England batted through the first session against a wayward Pakistani attack to be 1 for 90 at lunch after Trescothick (36) was caught just after drinks. However, straight after lunch Pakistan struck twice removing Vaughan (32) and Atherton (42) as England subsided to 3 for 114. The Pakistanis kept the pressure on and England only added 54 runs in the session and was 3 for 146 at tea. England regained the initiative in the evening session adding 108 more runs for the loss of Thorpe (80) to be 4 for 254 at stumps. On the third morning Pakistan dismissed night watchman and debutant Sidebottom (4) without addition to the overnight score. They went on to break Hussain's thumb - sidelining him for the series - before dismissing him for 64 and Stewart (44) while England added 87 more runs before going to lunch at 7 for 341. Pakistan took just over an hour to remove the final three batsmen as the English innings ended with 391 runs on the board. Mahmood was the most successful bowler with 4 for 50 off 26 overs. Pakistan made a poor start to their innings losing Elahi (0) and Anwar (12) as the slumped to 2 for 21. England claimed Inzamam (13) and Razzaq (22) early in the evening session before Youhana (26) and Younis (32) added some stability. When bad light finished play for the day Pakistan was 4 for 115 still needing 127 more runs to reach the follow on target. England claimed the wickets of Youhana (26) and Mahmood (14) in the first hour of the fourth day as Pakistan tottered at 6 for 153. Younis (58) and Latif (18) offered the only resistance but when they fell the tail collapsed and Pakistan was dismissed for 203. Gough was the best of the bowlers with 5 for 61 off 16 overs. England enforced the follow on and Pakistan was in instant trouble as Elahi (0) recorded his pair in the second over and soon after Anwar (8) was also out as Pakistan slumped to 2 for 30. England tore through the middle order taking three wickets in six overs to firmly nail the coffin shut on Pakistan at 5 for 87. Razzaq (53) added some stability with Mahmood (24) and while tail enders Latif (20), Wasim (12) and Waqar (21) made more than most of the top order, it was not enough to stave off an innings and 9 run defeat. Caddick took 4 for 54 off 18 overs to be the most successful bowler. Second Test Old Trafford 31 May - 4 June 2001 Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat first during a rain interrupted first session. England struck early dismissing Razzaq (1) and Faisal (16) to have Pakistan at 2 for 39. England then snared Anwar (29) at lunch to hold a slight advantage with the score 3 for 86. England struck again straight after lunch to remove Youhana (4) and just before tea Younis (65) was trapped in front. However, Inzamam posted his hundred during the session and Pakistan was 5 for 233 at tea. England finally dismissed Inzamam (114) soon after tea when the score was 6 for 255. The Pakistan tail then wagged convincingly giving them the upper hand at 8 for 370 at stumps having lost Mahmood (37) and Wasim (16) while Latif (64*) remained unbeaten at the other end. England claimed the final two wickets for the addition of 33 runs as Pakistan was dismissed for 403 after half an hour of the second morning with Latif run out for 71 valuable runs. Gough (3 for 94 off 23.4), Caddick (3 for 111 off 28) and Hoggard (3 for 79 off 19) shared the bowling honours for England. Similar to Pakistan, England had a poor start to their innings losing their openers to be 2 for 15 early in their innings. However, England then staged a recovery and was 2 for 79 at lunch. The recovery continued for England as they batted through the afternoon session without loss to be 2 for 173 at tea. The evening session was shortened by rain and at stumps England was 2 for 204 having passed the follow on target. England continued on the third morning until just before lunch when Thorpe (137) was run out in a mix up and then Vaughan (120) was caught behind. At lunch, England was 4 for 298 still 105 runs in arrears. A second run out of Ward (12) not long after lunch gave Pakistan hope before England lost their remaining five wickets in a twenty minute period before tea for just 9 runs. England was all out for 357 with Stewart stranded on 39 not out while Razzaq, who created the collapse, was the most successful bowler with 3 for 61 off 19 overs. Pakistan began adding to their 46 run first innings lead at seven runs per over. However, while after six overs they had added 41 runs, they had also lost both openers again as Anwar (12) and Razzaq (22) were caught. England claimed a third wicket of Fasail (14) an hour later and when bad light stopped play Pakistan was 3 for 87 with a lead of 133 runs. England needed to break through on the fourth morning to restrict their victory target. However, Inzamam and Pakistan had other ideas and batted without loss through the session to be 3 for 181 at lunch having stretched their lead to 227 runs. A glimmer of hope arrived for England as they struck twice just after lunch removing Inzamam (85) and Youhana (49) at have Pakistan 5 for 208. England then capitalised half an hour later as Younis (17) and Mahmood (14) both fell but by tea Pakistan was 7 for 274 at tea with a lead of 320 and the Test seemingly at their disposal. Pakistan lasted another 30 minutes after tea before they were all out for 323 and a notable 36 by Wasim Akram. In a repeat performance from the first innings, Gough (3 for 85 off 22.5), Caddick (3 for 92 off 22) and Hoggard (3 for 93 off 29) again shared the bowling honours. Pakistan had set England a victory target of 370 runs in 112 overs and by stumps England had made a competent start and was 85 runs with out loss needing a further 285 runs to win. England began slowly on the final morning but managed to get through until the stroke of lunch before the man most likely to defy Pakistan, Atherton (51), was bowled with the score 1 for 149. The frustration heightened for Pakistan in the afternoon session as Trescothick passed his century. Pakistan was only able to claim the wicket of Vaughan (14) during the session and at tea England was 2 for 196 with the game petering toward a draw. England passed 200 after tea but then Waqar removed Thorpe (10) at 3 for 201 and Wasim Akram had Trecothick (117) caught behind at 4 for 213. Something spooked the remaining batsmen as suddenly Saqlain tore through the middle order as England lost four wickets for one run to crash to 8 for 230 with one hour remaining. Pakistan claimed the final two wickets to dismiss England for 261 giving them victory by 108 runs and drawing the series. Saqlain Mushtaq was the best of the bowlers with 4 for 74 off 47 overs. |
