Max stood towards the back of the room, watching the people dance. He hadn't wanted to come to the club, but Isabelle had pushed him. She told him he needed to accept the fact that Liz had gone back to Kyle and move on. But, how could he just forget the feelings he'd had for Liz. He looked across the room and saw Maria dancing with Alex.
Max stared at Maria as she danced, watching her smile. He still couldn't understand Michael's decision to break things off with Maria. She was a sweet person, and she was crazy about him. Max had been envious of the relationship they'd had. But Michael had done everything he could to push Maria away, and Max couldn't help be angry at Michael for hurting Maria. Now, as he stood watching her, he felt a stirring of emotion he had never felt when he looked at her before.
Without thinking about what he was doing, Max made his way over to Maria and Alex, and asked if he could cut in. Alex left to find Isabelle. Maria smiled up at him, and Max pulled her into his arms. He held her in his arms, thinking how right it felt to be holding her. She leaned her head against his shoulder, and he tightened his embrace.
A part of Max told him that he was treading on dangerous ground. Although Liz had been the one to end their relationship, he didn't think she'd like him pursuing her best friend. And then there was Michael. He may have decided that he didn't want Maria, but that didn't mean he'd want to see her with Max. There were so many reasons why Max knew he should just back off before anything happened. But, the feel of Maria in his arms was too much for him to resist.
Max slid his hands down Maria's back as her arms wound tightly around his waist. He knew she was having the same doubts and emotions as he was. They moved as one to the music, oblivious to everything else in the room. The only thing that existed to them at that moment was each other.
Max stood outside Maria's house, his arms wrapped around her waist. They looked into each other's eyes and knew that something had started between them. Thoughts of Liz and Michael faded as Max bent and kissed Maria gently. He moved his hand up to cup her neck and deepened the kiss. Max smiled as a flushed Maria entered the house.
Later that night, as Max laid in his bed, he knew that his feelings for Maria had changed. He wanted to explore these new emotions, despite the possible problems it could cause. As far as he was concerned, Liz and Michael had given up any say on anything he and Maria did. He and Maria were free to pursue any relationship they wanted. And after that night, he knew both of them wanted to pursue a relationship. Max drifted into a peaceful sleep, thoughts of Maria filling his dreams.
