Then helped to document the Global Office’s Project Management System, created documentation tem­plates and guidelines. Also worked on various technical documents for the Global Desktop Windows 2000 project (e.g., installation, customisation and training guides, deployment planning guide, etc.).

Worked on the following projects: 1) Infrastructure: Application Server Platform (NT/Unix), End-User Platform, and Base Release (NT4). 2) Intranet: web page/site design, on-line Help, training, and web publishing solutions. 3) Trading: Dealer Workstation Software, Market Data Services, Dealing System for FX, MM, & PM), and Global Trading and Risk Management. This work involved writ­ing/editing technical reference manuals and user guides/training ma­terials, in hardcopy/on-line for­mats. I also defined the style files, templates, and examples for the documenta­tion set, and wrote the group’s documentation guidelines. Provided training and support for users of VMS, Mac, & Windows documentation tools. Supervised a trainee Techni­cal Writer for 3 months, and gave interactive courses in use of FrameMaker, Web Publishing/documentation tools.
Also provided con­sultancy for the Bank's Intranet group in web-page design and web publishing solu­tions (an MSc). Created vari­ous web/on-line Help pages for the bank’s Intranet using FrontPage and other HTML creation/conversion tools.

Worked as a Senior Technical Writer/Editor on the Interbank File Transfer (IFT) and User Security
Enhancement projects. This work involved planning the documentation, reviewing technical project documents, and writing user handbooks/training materials, as well as designing the MS-Word style files/tem­plates used to create the documents. (Also attended an X.400 course during this period.)

Digital Equipment Corporation, Evry, Paris/Munich, Germany: Jan. ‘89 to August ‘89
Worked in the User Information Group on Computerised Numerical Control (CNC) documenta­tion for vari­ous Computer Integrated Manufacturing projects. This work involved writ­ing installation and sys­tem man­age­ment guides, programmer's reference guides, and some on-line help/training. I also helped with the internation­alisation of the DNC software and staff training.

Digital Equipment Corporation, Valbonne, France, June ‘87 to Dec. ‘88
Worked in the User Information Group where I wrote the documentation for the VMS utility File Transfer Spooler for VAX/VMS, and the LAN Reports Toolkit. (Attended courses on "VAX Document" and "Effective Technical Writing".) Then moved to the Service Engineering Group to set up a new documentation facility. Assessed the methods currently being used by the department; suggested ways to improve them; determined and in­stalled/managed the writing tools to be used; and implemented a documen­tation production system for their con­sultancy services. Wrote the group's documentation standards & style guide, and provided a VAX Document consult­ing and training service for the staff. Refor­matted, edited, and wrote various docu­ments (technical refer­ence manu­als, user manuals, and tuto­rial/promo­tional materials) for the Service Delivery Kits pro­vided by the group.

Philips, Vienna, Austria, Dec. ‘86 to May ‘87
Worked as a Senior Technical Writer/Editor in the PC documentation department. Wrote the docu­mentation style guide and technical glossary for this group, as well as guidelines for the production of laser-printed man­uals using WordStar. Provided training to other members of staff in all areas of these guidelines. Revised the Software Technical Reference Manual for the ‘:YES’ PC.

Olivetti, Ivrea, Italy, Jan. ‘85. to Nov. ‘86
Senior Technical Writer/Project Co-ordinator in the Office Automation and PC departments. I worked on a wide range of documentation projects for both Minicomputer and PC products. Wrote various manuals (user, refer­ence, tutorial, & promotional) for stand-alone and integrated office automation products, and on-line docu­ments for PC programs. For example, the spelling checker tutorial for the Olitext Word Processor, and an MS–DOS On-Line Help system. I was responsible for all technical aspects of on-line documentation projects: testing soft­ware used to pro­duce electronic books/tutorials; act­ing as liaison between Olivetti and the 3rd-party soft­ware house; detect­ing any problems with new software; aiding the translation activities of European subsidiaries, etc. Provided training and technical support for other writers (including running courses on PCs, MS–DOS, & on-line documentation tools), as well as writing ‘simulation’ programs in a spe­cially developed programming language, and using the tools to write my own on-line books and tutorials.

InterEurope Technical Services Ltd., Wokingham, Berks, Apr. ‘84 to Dec. ‘84
Worked on a telecommunications project for a UK defence contractor (security cleared). I worked on documents relating to: database management, communications link control, message store/forward, & call security. The documents were produced to military standards, and were intended for support pro­grammers, and as a training aid for users. (Also attended an introductory course in Technical Writing.)
