Horror punk is a dark style of music mixing Gothic and Punk Rock sounds with morbid imagery. Often, song topics are taken from horror movies, but the best horror punk creates atmosphere by telling tales through the song. It is closely related to and often overlaps with the Death Rock movement; which tends to lean more towards the goth or Rockabilly sound—usually excluding hardcore punk and metal bands.
The Misfits are considered to be the first Horror Punk band. They were followed by bands like Samhain (now known as the doom metal band Danzig, headed by the former front man of The Misfits), 45 Grave, and Mourning Noise. In England about the same time, the band Rudimentary Peni went from their anarcho-punk roots to something more death rock, lyrically influenced by the works of HP Lovecraft, and created another Horror Punk sound. Horror Punk continues as a thriving sub-genre with dedicated websites, festivals, and current bands such as Mister Monster, The Undead, Cancerslug, The EverDead, Blitzkid, The Cryptkeeper Five, Nim Vind, Dead End Drive In, The Blowtops, The Rabies, Mockingbird Lane, Day of the Sick, Murderdolls, Fletch Cadillac, etc. (Info courtesy of Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.) |
