H-1B Class Action
INS H-1B Counts
"Petitions"
FY 2002 - QTR 1,2,3 (Oct 1, 2001 - Jun 30, 2002)
60,500 approved, 18,000 pending
INS US DOJ
(Beware of the tricky language - "individuals" vs. "petitions")
==================================================================
(average of 6 H-1Bs to a "petition" in 2001)
FY 2001 - (Oct 1, 2000 - Sep 30, 2001)
"163,200 H-1B petitions", "29,000 petitions pending"
INS US DOJ
(Notice: these counts reflect "petitions", not "individuals".
Actual counts from my LCA database downloaded from US DOL ETA
show 229,107 LCAs certified for 1,234,275 visas. Thousands of
records were omitted on my database due to data errors and faulty
access programs at US DOL ETA.)
[The above, which supports the well-publicised number of 163,200,
does not coincide with this report:]

Table 2. Number of H-1B Petitions Filed in Fiscal Year 2001 by Quarter
and Reason of Exemption from Fee as of June 30, 2001
Fiscal Year 2001: Oct 00 Jan 01 Apr 01 Oct 00
to Dec 00 to Mar 01 to Jun 01 to Jun 01
TOTAL PETITIONS FILED* 128,758 75,396 65,952 270,106
Without fee exemptions 119,493 66,778 54,476 240,747
[240,747 paid $1,000 fees. That's $240 million into the training
fund (in 9 months) that Bush is going to redirect to "fast track"
visa processing in the 2003 budget. There is probably a $billion
in the fund as 2001 was a slow year. Incidently, the cap on visas
was 195,000, but who's counting?]
[270,106 with three months to go. Where did they get 163,200?
The final 2001 tally will be released in June of 2003, as usual.]
