The Quechua Rural Family Development Project / A Human Needs Project of Southland Baptist Church. Our Appropriate Technology Page.

Click on the pictures below to see Appropriate Technologies that we design and teach local area shops to build and make available to families at a price they can afford. We design local solutions to local problems.

Our project has developed a low cost pump and manual well drilling method. We form "water clubs" and teach families to drill their own water wells. We lend the material to start up and provide training. The families later pay us back (after harvest when they have some money)and more clubs can be formed. When families pull togeather and drill their own wells the cost for a complete well and pump is between $50 and $100.

We have also desiigned and built several low cost unique windmill models that allow a family to achieve complete water indepence for both family and farm need.

We are also working on low cost farming tools and technologies as an alternative to slash and burn or expensive dept inducing tractor farming (where families go in debt to prepare land and have to rent heavy machinery every season). Shown is a prototype motorized zero tillage seeder that cost about $700. If this appoach works it should lower the cost of farming and increase income for our families.

Here is our new prototype motorized drilling rig. Very low cost uses the exact techniqe as the manual method. For use when many wells are needed and labor short.

Our Zero Tillage Technologies. An environmentally sustainable, socially afordable alternative to slash and burn or tractor tillage. No plowing needed! Zero errosion! Much less damaging to the environment than plowing which can damage tropical soils. Preliminary results (up to 4 tons/hec. soybeans) look promising. Pray for us as we continue to test and develop these tools for poor families who need alternatives to unproductive slash and burn or expensive and damaging tractor tillage.

Our prototype motorized zero tillage seeder to allow small farmers a low cost, high yielding, sustainable alternative to slash and burn agriculture. In testing.

This is our proto type locally produced low cost hand sprayer cart for zero tillage. When combined with the zero tllage seeder small farmers trying to move beyond subsistance poverty will no longer be dependent on renting heavy tractors and equipment for tillage.
