During the course of meeting with residents in and around the Hellbranch Run watershed to conduct a new study of the area, Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission officials heard several variations on the theme of how the stream was named.

The one that crops up most often is the explanation to which senior project coordinator Frances Beasley gives the most credence.

It seems the most likely, she said, and is also the most fun.

This theory holds that locals used to complain that when the stream overflows its banks, as it does from time to time, it "floods like hell."
