Here are the photos taken during our visit to Palo Duro Canyon State Park  on Oct 20, 2001 for the  Palo Duro 50km Trail Race.  Sylvia, Homero, Mariela, and I had been training for this 50km trail race since the late  spring.   In late September, I noticed an intermittent pain in my right knee. The  culprit was torn cartilage and I had arthroscopic surgery on Oct 9th.  Eventhough  I was not able to run  in  this trail race as planned, I was able to volunteer at  aid stations and take photos during the race.

The Houston-area had good representation  at this trail race.. about a dozen or so runners participated in this year's 3 events  (20km, 50km, and 50 mile).
The trail race took place in Palo Duro Canyon State Park about 25 miles
south of Amarillo in the Texas Panhandle!

This photo shows Sylvia , Linda and Mariela  at the entrance to the State Park.

The Start/Finish Area was colorfully decorated with Texas flags and a US flag.  The race  started  at 7:30am,  about 20 minutes before sunrise to the sound of scottish bagpipes . The air  temperature in the canyon was  nippy.... in the upper 30's during the start of the race.
This photo was taken of Homero (at about the 6 mile mark) following the completion of
the first loop at the aid station located at Start/Finish Aid Station .
