Ally: Mister Hall, I don't specialize in criminal law. Harvey Hall: (client) It doesn't matter. You can fly. (pause) Ally: I'm sorry? Harvey: You believe, Miss McBeal. I knew form the second I saw you. You can fly.(pause) Ally: Why would you think that? Harvey: Because you've done it. Ally: Harvey, (pause) you need to let me argue diminished capacity. (pause) Harvey: I'm not crazy. (pause) I mean, it's not like I jump out of an airplane without a parachute. I've already done this well enough not to get hurt. Ally: But, why are you doing it? Harvey: Because, I just have to. It's like a quest. Remember Don Kioti? He needed a quest. He fought dragons. Ally: Well, actually, they were windmills. And, Don Kioti was mad. (pause) Harvey: You know, when i first saw you in court at my arrangment, you reminded me on Dulcinea. (pause) (Ally has a serious look on her face) What's wrong? (pause) Ally, what's wrong (apuse) Ally: Nothing. (pause) It's just that my father used to sing dulcinea to me as I was growing up. (pause) Harvey: Tell me about when you would fly. Ally: So, you'de (fly) when your parents fought? Harvey: Yes. I was so afraid they'd divorce. So, I'd stand there at my bedroom window when i couldn't drown them out with music. (pause) There's a sense of escape. The dream of it. And it was quiet up there. It was joyess. And I wouldn't hear them fighting. I couldn't hear anger. Ally: You know, I feel like I've known you forever. Harvey: Ally, I'm not dying. I mean, I might be dying, but not today. (Ally touches the wings he's carrying) Ally: Well, whatever happens out there you just promise me that you won't stop flapping. Harvey: (laughing) I promise. Go get my sister company, okay? (Ally starts to walk away) Oh, Ally? (Ally turns around) We have known eachother forever. Ally's office- Ally sitting at desk; Marie (Harvey's sister) comes in; Ally gets up Marie: It was a heart attack. The cancer treatment had evidentally weakened his heart. And - uhm - I'm arranging the services. It'll probably be Tuesday or Wednesday. i'll let you know. Ally: Okay. (pause) Marie: Thank you, Ally. Ally: Thank me? I - (pause) I helped to kill him. Marie: No. No, you didn't. (pause) And, because of you he got to fly. (pause) That look on his face it was the happiest - (pause) I'll never forget it. (pause) And, I'll never forget you for giving him that moment. (pause) My brother flew. (pause) Did you see it? He flew. Ally: Yes. He did. Marie: Yea. Well, I'll see you next week. (Starts to leave) Ally: Marie. (Marie turns around) I'm so sorry for your loss. (pause) Marie: Thank you. (pause) And, I'm sorry for yours. (pause) He told me you knew eachother for a long time. (pause) Ally: Yea. (Marie smiles and leaves; Ally turns around and stares out the window) |
