Richard: He's staying on council, but he won't be named partner anymore. Ally: So, what are you gonna name the frim? Fish? Richard: No. I wanna change the name, but I thought first I'd better run by you. Ally: Why? Richard: I wanna change it to Fish and McBeal. Ally: Funny, Richard. Funny, Richard. Do I look like a person who has time for jokes? Richard: It's not a joke. I wanna make you partner. (Ally imagines her tongue and mouth expand in length) Ally? I'm making you partner. This is where you hug me, big kiss, maybe a little tongue even. (pause) Ally: Now? (Richard nods yes) I just got to a point in my life where-I, I -(pause) I don't even want it. Now? Richard: Now. Ally: Uah. (pause) Uah, I just-(Ally sits on the couch) Fish and McBeal? Richard: Yea. Yea. Yea. Ally: (lys on couch; sits back up) You know that technically it would sound better if it were McBeal and Fish. Richard: Forget it. (pause) Ally: Fish and McBeal. Richard: Yea. Ally: (lys on the couch) Fish and McBeal. Fish and McBeal. Classroom-Maddie is sitting at her desk along with the other kids;Ally is also sitting at a desk. Teacher:(sitting at her desk) By smooth read I mean simply that. The books u can read smoothly. (Gets up) You should be engaged by the story. If a reading is too difficult; either the spelling is too hard or you're having trouble following what the story's about, this would not be a smooth read. Put it down. On your own time, when u pick up a book, reading should be fun. Remember, once u finish with a book, check it off the list so I can keep track. (Ally raises her hand as she's writing notes) Yes, Maddie's mother. Ally: Must the books be from your list? If I have a book that's not in the list that would appear to be a smooth read, can I let her read it? And, should there be a book in the list that I don't want her to read, am I premitted to- Teacher: Is there a book you find inappropriate? Ally: Well, I see that the kids are reading a novelization of Annie that I wouldn't want her reading because it disparages orphins. (pause) Classmate: (to another kid in the class;points to Maddie and whispers) Looks like Goldilocks. (Ally raises her hand) Ally: Excuse me? That chunky little boy right there just insulted my daughter. I heard it. Teacher: Miss McBeal- Ally: I apologize. But, I am very concerned about her making new friends. She's in a new school. That fat kid seems nasty. And, you've got books picking on orphans. And, prejudice comes in smooth reads by the way because bigets cannot spell. |
