Gene Hackman in a Tennis Club

Before I forget:
--Watch me this Wednesday night on E! Entertainment's Special "Reese
Witherspoon: Hollywood's Golden Girl" at 9 PM.
--See Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang. It's a trinity of misunderstood brilliance: Shane
Black, Val Kilmer and Robert Downey Jr. Black further proves he's not only
one of Hollywood's smartest writers (with Lethal Weapon and the criminally
underrated The Last Boy Scout and The Long Kiss Goodnight on his resume)
but an excellent director as well. Read Culturepulp's M.E. Russell's great
interview with the director.
--Read the The Secret Life of the Lonely Doll: The Search for Dare Wright by
Jean Nathan. Learn the dark world behind one of my favorite children's authors
who wrote and crafted the wonderfully cute/weird pictures of her doll and stuffed
bears in the Lonely Doll books. They had the distinct feature of doll Edith getting
spanked by Mr. Bear in almost every story which I thought was weird when I was
little, now I understand a few things. I read this last year and re-read it again this
week--it never leaves me. It was like discovering another version of Grey Gardens.
--Rent or buy Arthur Penn's Night Moves. One of the greatest neo-noirs of the 1970's
stars one of cinema's finest--Gene Hackman (the only man I've ever had a sex dream
about--it was in a tennis club for some reason...). Thoughtful, sad, hard-edged, rotten,
sensitive, this movie has all the necessary '70s existential angst mixed in a deceptively
sunny milieu. And Hackman's character utters the line: "I saw a Rohmer film once. It
was kinda like watching paint dry." This is from "The French Connection" not "Night Moves"
but still...he's damn sexy.

"Night Moves" also stars the great Susan Clark as well as a young James Woods
and a VERY young Melanie Griffith, in what must be her first nude scene. This movie
is a great example of what made '70s films so special.

Gene Hackman is the only man you've ever had a sex dream about? Wow. I don't
think I've read anything that scary since the last time I took a look at a Playboy
Centerfold's hand-scrawled 'turn-ons.' Memo to the E! golden girl: upgrade your
REM fantasies... ASAP!

I think it's awesome she had a sex dream about Gene Hackman! It's a lot more
interesting than the typical--like Brad Pitt or someone like that. As for comparing
that to Playboy turn ons, please. Gene "Popey Doyle" Hackman is much sexier
than "honesty" or "a sense of humor" or "long walks on the beach."
I wish I had a sex dream about Gene Hackman!

I dunno if you really want that, Mary. I dreamed of Hackman once, after a night of pizza and tequila and "Prime Cut." And let's just say Gene was a little on the rough side. Talk about a Royal Tenenbaum! OW! ;)
