In the name of Allah most

Muslim (Book #006, Hadith #2603)
Abu Qatada al-Ansari (Allah be
pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him)
was asked about his fasting. The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him)
felt annoyed. Thereupon 'Umar (Allah be pleased with him) said: We are pleased
with Allah as the Lord, with Islam as our Code of Life, with Muhammad as the
Messenger and with our pledge (to you for willing and cheerful submission) as a
(sacred) commitment. He was then asked about perpetual fasting, whereupon he
said: He neither fasted nor did he break it, or he did not fast and he did not
break it. He was then asked about fasting for two days and breaking one day. He
(the Holy Prophet) said: And who has strength enough to do it? He was asked
about fasting for a day and breaking for two days, whereupon he said: May Allah
bestow upon us strength to do it. He was then asked about fasting for a day and
breaking on the other, whereupon he said: That is the fasting of my brother
David (peace be upon him). He was then asked about fasting on monday,
whereupon he said: It was the day on which I was born. on which I was
commissioned with prophethood or revelation was sent to me, (and he
further) said: Three days' fasting every month and of the whole of Ramadan
every year is a perpetual fast. He was asked about fasting on the day of 'Arafa
(9th of Dhu'I-Hijja), whereupon he said: It expiates the sins of the preceding
year and the coming year. He was asked about fasting on the day of 'Ashura
(10th of Muharram), whereupon be said: It expiates the sins of the preceding year.
(Imam Muslim said that in this hadith there is a) narration of Imam Shu'ba that
he was asked about fasting on monday and Thursday, but we (Imam Muslim) did not
mention Thursday for we found it as an error (in reporting).
*Note:It Was Monday ,the day which
was important for Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him and not the date.If
Birthdate comes on Saturday then one does not fast thinking its for birthday.
The Importance is given to the day not to the date. The day is important for
reasons as birthday, day when prophethood was commissioned or revelation was
sent.
Sunan of Abu-DawoodHadith 2430
Narrated byUsamah ibn Zayd The client of Usamah ibn Zayd said that
he went along with Usamah to Wadi al-Qura in pursuit of his camels. He would
fast on Monday and Thursday. His client said to him: Why do you fast on Monday
and Thursday, while you are an old man? He said: The Prophet of Allah (peace be
upon him) used to fast on Monday and Thursday. When he was asked about it, he
said: The works of the servants (of Allah) are presented (to Allah) on Monday
and Thursday.
*Note:On Monday and Thursday
deeds are presented to Allah subhanawatala.
For the love of Prophet
Muhammad peace be upon him and also for the reasons presented nawafil
[optional] fasting can be practiced.

The Prophet said, "You
will follow the ways of those nations who were before you, span by span and
cubit by cubit (i.e., inch by inch) so much so that even if they entered a hole
of a mastigure, you would follow them." We said, "O Allah's Apostle!
(Do you mean) the Jews and the Christians?" He said, "Whom
else?"

Sahih Muslim HadithHadith 6159 Narrated byAisha
A person asked Allah's Apostle
(peace be upon him) as to who amongst the people were the best. He said: Of the
generation to which I belong, then of the second generation (generation
