The Right To Education &
The Duty To Learn
96:1 Proclaim! (or Read!) in the name of thy Lord and Cherisher Who
created
68:1 Nun. By the Pen and by
the (Record) which (men) write
96:4 He Who taught (the use of) the Pen
5.Taught man that which he
knew not.
20:114 High above all is Allah the King the Truth! Be not in haste with
the Qur'an before its revelation to thee is completed but say "O my Lord!
advance me in knowledge."
3:104 Let there
arise out of you a band of people inviting to all that is good enjoining what
is right and forbidding what is wrong; they are the ones to attain felicity.
58:11 O ye who believe! When ye are told to make room in the assemblies
(spread out and) make room: (Ample) room will Allah provide for you. And when
ye are told to rise up rise up: Allah will raise up to (suitable) ranks (and
degrees) those of you who believe and who have been granted Knowledge: and
Allah is well-acquainted with all ye do.
9:122 Nor should the believers all go forth together: if a contingent
from every expedition remained behind they could devote themselves to
studies in religion and admonish the people when they return to them that
thus they (may learn) to guard themselves (against evil).
3:110 Ye are the best of peoples evolved for mankind enjoining what is right
forbidding what is wrong and believing in Allah. If only the People of the Book had faith it were best for them;
among them are some who have faith but most of them are perverted
transgressors.
22:54 And that those on whom knowledge has been bestowed may learn that
the (Qur'an) is the Truth from thy Lord and that they may believe therein and
their hearts may be may be made humbly (open) to it: for verily Allah is the
Guide of those who believe to the Straight Way.
2:32 They said: "Glory to Thee of knowledge we have none save
that Thou hast taught us: in truth it is Thou who art perfect in knowledge and
wisdom."
12:21 The man in Egypt who bought him said to his wife: "Make his
stay (among us) honorable: maybe he will bring us much good or we shall adopt
him as a son." Thus did we establish Joseph in the land that We might
teach him the interpretation of stories (and events). And Allah hath full power and control over His affairs; but most
among mankind know it not
22 When Joseph attained his full manhood We gave him power and
knowledge: thus do We reward those who do right.
14:4 We sent an apostle except (to teach) in the language of his
(own) people in order to make (things) clear to them. Now Allah leaves straying those whom He pleases and guides whom
He pleases: and He is Exalted in power Full of Wisdom.
5 We sent Moses with Our Signs (and the command) "Bring
out thy people from the depths of darkness into light and teach them to
remember the Days of Allah." Verily in this there are Signs for such as
are firmly patient and constant grateful and appreciative.
51:55 But teach (thy Message): for teaching benefits the Believers.
56 I have only created jinns and men that they may serve Me
25:38 As also `Ad and Thamud and the Companions of the Rass and many a
generation between them.
39 To teach one We set forth parables and examples; and each
one We broke to utter annihilation (for their sins).
12:6 "Thus will thy Lord choose thee and teach thee the
interpretation of stories (and events) and perfect His favor to thee and to the
posterity of Jacob even as He perfected it to thy fathers Abraham and Isaac
aforetime! For Allah is full of knowledge and wisdom."
32:26 Does it not teach them a lesson how many generations We destroyed
before them in whose dwellings they (now) go to and fro? Verily in that are
Signs: do they not then listen?
18:66 Moses said to him: "May I follow thee on the footing that
thou teach me something of the (Higher) Truth which thou hast been
taught?"
42:38 Those who hearken to their Lord and establish regular prayer; who
(conduct) their affairs by mutual Consultation; who spend out of what We bestow
on them for Sustenance;
3:159 It is part of the Mercy of Allah that thou dost deal gently with
them. Wert thou severe or harsh-hearted they would have broken away from about
thee; so pass over (their faults) and ask for (Allah's) forgiveness for them;
and consult them in affairs (of moment).
Then when thou hast taken a decision put thy trust in Allah. For Allah loves those who put their trust
(in Him).
6:140 Lost are those who slay their children from folly without
knowledge and forbid food which Allah hath provided for them inventing (lies)
against Allah. They have indeed gone
astray and heeded no guidance.
29:8 We have enjoined on man kindness to parents: but if they
(either of them) strive (to force) thee to join with Me (in worship) anything
of which thou hast no knowledge obey them not.
Ye have (all) to return to Me and I will tell you (the truth) of all
that ye did.
9 And those who believe and work righteous deeds them shall
We admit to the company of the Righteous.
6:11 Say: "Travel through the earth and see what was the end of
those who rejected truth."
66:5 It may be if he divorced you (all) that Allah will give him in
exchange Consorts better than you who submit (their wills) who believe who are
devout who turn to Allah in repentance who worship (in humility) who travel
(for faith) and fast previously married or virgins.
16:36 For We assuredly sent amongst every People an apostle (with the
Command) "Serve Allah and eschew Evil": of the people were some whom
Allah guided and some on whom Error became inevitably (established). So travel
through the earth and see what was the end of those who denied (the Truth).
29:20 Say: "Travel through the earth and see how Allah did
originate creation: so will Allah produce a later creation: for Allah has power
over all things.
3:137 Many were the Ways of Life that have passed away before you:
travel through the earth and see what was the end of those who rejected truth.
30:42 Say: "Travel through the earth and see what was the End of
those before (you): most of them worshipped others besides Allah."
30:9 Do they not travel through the earth and see what was the End
of those before them? They were superior to them in strength: they tilled the
soil and populated it in greater numbers than these have done: there came to
them their apostles with Clear (Signs) (which they rejected to their own
destruction): it was not Allah Who wronged them but they wronged their own
souls.
2:273 (Charity is) for those in need who in Allah's cause are
restricted (from travel) and cannot move about in the land seeking (for trade
or work). The ignorant man thinks
because of their modesty that they are free from want. Thou shalt know them by their (unfailing)
mark: they beg not importunately from all and sundry. And whatever of good ye give be assured Allah knoweth it well.
10:94 If thou wert in doubt as to what We have revealed unto thee then
ask those who have been reading the Book from before thee: the Truth hath
indeed come to thee from thy Lord: so be in nowise of those in doubt.
21:7 Before thee also the apostles we sent were but men to whom We
granted inspiration: if ye realize this not ask of those who possess the
Message.
16:43 And before thee also the apostles We sent were but men to whom We
granted inspiration: if ye realize this not ask of those who possess the
Message
Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith
9.255 Narrated byAbdullah
Allah's Apostle said, "Do
not wish to be like anyone, except in two cases: (1) A man whom Allah has given
wealth and he spends it righteously. (2) A man whom Allah has given wisdom
(knowledge of the Qur'an and the Hadith) and he acts according to it and
teaches it to others."
Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4659 Narrated byZayd ibn Thabit
Allah's Messenger (peace be
upon him) ordered him to learn Syriac.
One version says he ordered him to learn the writing of the Jews,
saying, "I do not trust the Jews about what is written." He said he
learned it in less than half a month, and then wrote the Prophet's communications
to the Jews and read what they had written when they wrote to him.

Sahih Muslim HadithHadith 1904 Narrated byAbuRifa'ah
I came to the Prophet (peace be
upon him) when he was delivering the sermon, and I said: Messenger of Allah,
here is a stranger and he wants to learn about this religion and he does not
know what this religion is. The
Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) looked at me and left his sermon till he
came to me, and he was given a chair and I thought that its legs were made of
iron. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) sat in it and he began to
teach me what Allah had taught him. He then came (to the pulpit) for his sermon
and completed it to the end.
Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith
7.20 Narrated byAbu Burdas father
Allah's Apostle said, -Any man
who has a slave girl whom he educates properly, teaches good manners, manumits
and marries her, will get a double reward. And if any man of the people of the
Scriptures believes in his own prophet and then believes in me too, he will
(also) get a double reward. And any slave who fulfills his duty to his master
and to his Lord, will (also) get a double reward."
Travelling For The Sake Of
Learning
Sunan of Abu-DawoodHadith 4234 Narrated byHudhayfah
The tradition mentioned above
(No. 4232) has also been transmitted through a different chain of narrators by
Nasr ibn Asim al-Laythi who said: We came to al-Yashkuri with a group of the
people of Banu Layth. He asked: Who are
these people? We replied: Banu Layth.
We have come to you to ask you about the tradition of Hudhayfah. He then
mentioned the tradition and said: I asked: Apostle of Allah, will there be evil
after this good? He replied: There will
be trial (fitnah) and evil. I asked:
Apostle of Allah, will there be good after this evil? He replied: Learn the Book of Allah, Hudhayfah, and adhere to its
contents. He said it three times. I
asked: Apostle of Allah, will there be good after this evil? He replied: An illusory truce and a
community with specks in its eye. I
asked: Apostle of Allah, what do you mean by an illusory community? He replied: The hearts of the people will
not return to their former condition. I
asked: Apostle of Allah, will there be evil after this good? He replied: There will be wrong belief which
will blind and deafen men to the truth in which there will be summoners at the
gates of Hell. If you, Hudhayfah, die adhering to a stump, it will be better
for you than following any of them.
Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith
1.97A Narrated byAbu Burdas father
Allah's Apostle said
"Three persons will have a double reward:
1. A Person from the people of the scriptures who believed in
his prophet (Jesus or Moses) and then believed in the Prophet Muhammad (i.e.
has embraced Islam).
2. A slave who discharges his duties to Allah and his master.
3. A master of a woman-slave who teaches her good manners and
educates her in the best possible way (the religion) and manumits her and then
marries her."
Sunan of Abu-DawoodHadith 5128 Narrated byAbuSa'id al-Khudri
The Prophet (peace be upon
him) said: If anyone cares for three daughters, disciplines them, marries them,
and does good to them, he will go to Paradise.
Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith
8.37 Narrated byAbu Sulaiman and
Malik bin Huwairith
We came to the Prophet and we
were (a few) young men of approximately equal age and stayed with him for
twenty nights. Then he thought that we were anxious for our families, and he
asked us whom we had left behind to look after our families, and we told him.
He was kindhearted and merciful, so he said, "Return to your families and
teach them (religious knowledge) and order them (to do good deeds) and offer
your prayers in the way you saw me offering my prayers, and when the stated
time for the prayer becomes due, then one of you should pronounce its call
(i.e. the Adhan), and the eldest of you should lead you in prayer."
Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 2173 Narrated byJubayr ibn Nufayr
Allah's Messenger (peace be
upon him and grant him peace) said,
"Allah finished Surat al-Baqarah with two verses which I have been given
from His treasure which is under the Throne; so learn them and teach them to your
womenfolk, for they are a blessing, a means of a approach (to Allah) and a
supplication."
Darimi transmitted it in
mursal form.
Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 3069 Narrated byUmar ibn al-Khattab ; Abdullah
ibn Mas'ud
Umar said, "Learn the
rules of inheritance," Ibn Mas'ud

"for it pertains to your religion."
Darimi transmitted it.
Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 279 Narrated byAbdullah ibn Mas'ud
Allah's Messenger (peace be
upon him) said to me: Acquire the knowledge and impart it to the people.
Acquire the knowledge of Fara'id (laws of inheritance) and teach it to the
people, learn the Qur'an and teach it to the people; for I am a person who has
to depart this world and the knowledge will be taken away and turmoil will
appear to such an extent that two people will not agree in regard to a case of
inheritance distribution and find none who would decide between them.

Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 2143 Narrated byAbuHurayrah
Allah's Messenger (peace be
upon him) said, "Learn and recite the Qur'an, for to one who learns,
recites and uses it in prayer at night, it is like a bag filled with musk whose
fragrance is diffused everywhere; and he who learns it and goes to sleep having
it within him, is like a bag with musk tied up in it."
Tirmidhi, Nasa'i and Ibn Majah
transmitted it.
Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4934 Narrated byAbuHurayrah
Allah's Messenger (peace be
upon him) said, "Learn enough of your genealogies to show what ties of
relationship you should join, for joining ties of relationship is a means of
producing love in a family, increasing wealth and producing life."
Tirmidhi transmitted it,
saying this is a gharib tradition.
Al-Muwatta Hadith
Hadith 9.56
Waiting for The Prayer and Walking to It
Yahya related to me from Malik
from Sumayy, the mawla of Abu Bakr, that Abu Bakr ibn Abd ar-Rahman used to
say, "Someone who goes to the mosque in the morning or the afternoon with
no intention of going anywhere else, either to learn good or teach it, is like
someone who does jihad in the way of Allah and returns with booty."
Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 742 Narrated byAbuHurayrah
I heard Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) as saying: He who comes to this mosque of mine and he comes only to learn or teach a khayr (good, i.e. the Qur'an and the Sunnah), his status is like that of one who strives in the cause of Allah. He who comes for any other motive, his status is like that of a person who covets the property of another.

Bayhaqi in Shu'ab al-Iman.
Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 244 Narrated byAbuHurayrah

people, for I am a mortal.

Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith
6.546 Narrated byUthman bin Affan
The Prophet said, "The
most superior among you (Muslims) are those who learn the Qur'an and teach
it."
Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith
9.413 Narrated byAbu Said
A woman came to Allah's
Apostle and said, "O Allah's Apostle! Men (only) benefit by your
teachings, so please devote to us from (some of) your time, a day on which we
may come to you so that you may teach us of what Allah has taught you."
Allah's Apostle said, "Gather on such-and-such a day at such-and-such a
place." They gathered and Allah's Apostle came to them and taught them of
what Allah had taught him. He then said, "No woman among you who has lost
her three children (died) but that they will screen her from the Fire." A
woman among them said, "O Allah's Apostle! If she lost two children?"
She repeated her question twice, whereupon the Prophet said, "Even two,
even two, even two!" (See Hadith No. 341, Vol. 2)
The acquisition of the reward
of none of them will reduce the reward of the others."
Imam Preaching to women
Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith
2.78 Narrated byIbn Juraij
'Ata' said, "Jabir bin 'Abdullah said, 'The Prophet went out on the Day of 'Id-ul-Fitr and offered the prayer before delivering the Khutba. 'Ata' told me that during the early days of Ibn Az-Zubair, Ibn Abbas had sent a message to him telling him that the Adhan for the 'Id Prayer was never pronounced (in the life time of Allah's Apostle) and the Khutba used to be delivered after the prayer. 'Ata' told me that Ibn Abbas and Jabir bin 'Abdullah, had said there was no Adhan for the prayer of 'Id-ul-Fitr and 'Id-ul-Aqha.' " 'Ata' said, "I heard Jabir bin 'Abdullah saying, 'The Prophet stood up and started with the prayer, and after it he delivered the Khutba. When the Prophet of Allah (p.b.u.h) finished (the Khutba), he went to the women and preached to them, while he was leaning on Bilal's hand. Bilal was spreading his garment and the ladies were putting alms in it.' " I said to Ata, "Do you think it incumbent upon an Imam to go to the women and preach to them after finishing the prayer and Khutba?" 'Ata' said, "No doubt it is incumbent on Imams to do so, and why should they not do so?"
