the Gates of Hell

(1983)

Ah yes, THE GATES OF HELL... another one of those Italian zombiefests of which I don't care much for... well, ok, so this movie is one of the exceptions! Yeah, I know, you think I've sold out to the underground, and now I'm gonna be one of those Argento or Fulchi obsessors who do nothing but cry about the failures of American Cinema... well, screw you guys! I genuinely liked this Fulchi outing about a group of people out to stop the end of the world. It all starts when a priest hags himself in a cemetery, and a woman has a vision of the whole incident, then scream "city of the dead!", convulses, and dies. During the investigation of the whole thing, a belching flame appears in her apartment (?). The town of Dunwich is the setting, home of witch hunts, and of course, Manwich! Mmmmm, that is a tasty Sloppy Joe! Well, somehow, everyone managed to over look the fact that Mary (the woman) wasn't dead, because they buried her alive! Conveniently though, a reporter happens to be nearby when she wakes up and hears her tortured screams, unburying her. It turns out tat with the priest's suicide, the gates of hell were opened and they must be closed before the dead take control of the Earth! People begin dying left and right. The cause? FRIGHT!?... ok, that's screwed up... soon, the movie becomes an orgy of organ vomiting, bloody tears, vanishing corpi, raining maggots, and bleeding walls. Some guy named Bob (who's been running around through out the movie so far), winds up getting a drill shoved through his head by some ass pirate who thinks he's a dope addict. By the end, the cast is whittled down to Mary and her psychiatrist battling a gang o' zombies. Finally though, with the skewering of the priest zombie, the nightmare is over as the undead go up in flames and Mary screams at the site of some kid (I was disappointed the little turd survived... or did he?). Out of the few Fulchi movies I've seen so far, I'd have to say that this is by far his best!
