Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla II

(1993)

This fifth installment of the 80's - 90's G revamp series features the rebirth of THREE more Godzilla mainstays: the ever plucky Rodan, the computer with an attitude: MechaGodzilla, and the ever embarrassing Baby Godzilla! As with almost all of the second Godzilla series, I rated this one high, mainly because it once again impresses me visually, far more than the old series. But, I still don't like the human characters much. However, I think it's the fact that the revamp series all connect with each other that really does it for me! Well, on with the review. It all starts with the G-Force's new project: using the remains of Mecha-King Ghidorah with the help of some of the Earth's greatest scientific minds, they create the new, improved, and 100% man made MechaGodzilla! They also make the aircraft weapon Garuda, but put it on the back burner in favor of the more promising MechaG... trust me, this actually makes a difference later on. Meanwhile, the Garuda's creator has been reassigned to G-Force, where we witness his comical combat training and such. Elsewhere, a big egg has been discovered (that's the second large egg in as many Godzilla movies) and an impressive looking, less-Big-Bird-in-appearance version of Rodan shows up to stake his claim! Of course, the ever greedy Godzilla also appears to make his intentions for the egg known, which leads to the film's first of multiple fights! Yep, "multiple"! Well, despite Rodan's lack of arms and any kind of projectile weapon, he does manage to hold Godzilla off pretty good using just his wings, spiked belly, and diamond hard pecker (heh heh)! In the end, though, he's still no match for the big G, as he sends the plucked pigeon packing with his atomic breath. Oh, and while all this was going on, the team of scientists who discovered the egg have made off with it in their chopper! As they later study it, they find it has a tendency to turn a bright red in times of stress. This leads me to the conclusion that it's not an egg, but simply the lost stone from Godzilla's mood ring! Finally, the egg does hatch, revealing a baby Godzillasaur, who looks much more like daddy than that Minya pussy ever did! The baby also gets attached to the female scientist who basically took care of him in egg form... just thought I'd throw that in there. Meanwhile, G has found his way back to the mainland, up to his old games of "stomp the little people" and smashing buildings! Now it's time for the new MechaGodzilla to prove his worth! Despite getting in some good shots and a near K.O., Godzilla turns MechaG's own attack against him, as once again the government screws the taxpayers and wastes their money! G then proceeds to stomp some toy tanks and swat model planes in his rampage toward Kyoto to pick up his little bastard. Instead of doing the smart and economical thing and just giving up Little G, the overrated geniuses decide to lock themselves and Little G in an isolated basement to block his cries to daddy. The plan actually works, though now Godzilla has caused millions of dollars in damage for nothing! Now, the G-Force goes with another plan, since their fancy robot fumbled on 'em! This time they plan to use the Garuda craft in conjunction with the newly repaired MechaG, in the hopes of making a Super MechaGodzilla that will succeed where the other failed! Also, they've got their new plan "G-Crusher", in which they plan to blow up G's second brain (in his lower back), making him helpless to their assault! Before they can do this, Rodan refuses to have a one-fight cameo, so he makes himself a bigger player when he's resurrected into "Fire Rodan", complete with fancy new heat ray! Now, with energy weapon, Rodan (who everyone insists on calling "Radon") does some of his own property damage as he makes a move for the lizard kid! Instead, he gets a rude reality check when not even his new heat beam is enough to defeat the repaired MechaG, and he falls once more, beaten to a pulp. This does, however, bring Godzilla out of the briny deep to play once more, as he goes claw-to-metallic-claw with the Super MechaGodzilla! G's brain doesn't have a chance! And sure enough, he's soon writhing on the ground, near the brink of death at the steel grip of MechaG as the "G-Crusher" plan reaches fruition. With his last ounce of strength, the dying Rodan makes a sacrifice, turning to healing, electric glitter, transferring his power to the dying Godzilla, healing his brain and making him strong enough to take down the Super MechaG! Oh, and Rodan's electric glitter also melts MechaG's diamond shielding... heh heh, that sneaky Pteradon. After obliterating his iron clone like it was a PC Jr., Godzilla claims his kid, and off they go to deal with the zany mishaps of being a single parent... not unlike a giant, radioactive Murphy Brown! Dan Quayle, look out! I think what really got me with this flick, was the fact that they improved on both Rodan, Baby Godzilla, AND MechaGodzilla! Also, there was lots of monster fighting! If anything can make a movie better, it's grown men in rubber monster costumes hitting each other!
