Wishmaster

(1997)

The Wes Craven flick that shows us NO ONE learned anything from Disney's ALADDIN. WISHMASTER is about the Djinn, a member of a race of magically endowed demons born of fire and living in Limbo, commonly known as Genies. Back in Persia 1127 AD, after causing some major chaos, an alchemist, enchanter, whatever you wanna call him, locks the Djinn up in a red opal. In present day USA, a crate is dropped from a cargo ship and crushes Ted Raimi (WAHOO!). A doc worker swipes the opal containing Djinn that breaks from the art work broken in the accident. In eventually winds up in the hands of Alex, a hot young jem appraiser and Girl's Basketball coach (the hot ones ONLY found in movies) who gives the opal to her would-be love interest (i.e. "friend") Josh. But, as he analyzes the thing, it explodes and Djinn (pronounced "gin") is freed from his centuries of capture. Stalking through NYC, Djinn grants people's wishes for a small fee... their souls... bet ya didn't see that coming! Or maybe you did... who cares. During all this wacky wish granting (which is almost ALWAYS twisted because people aren't specific enough when wording their answers), Alex keeps having images of Djinn and his evil acts popping up in her head, driving her mad. Djinn has to grant Alex 3 wishes after he has powered the opal with human souls. Upon granting her 3rd wish, the gateway to Limbo will be opened and the other Djinns will come to earth (and what? grant more wishes?!). Robert Englund plays an art collector who's throwing a little party, which Djinn crashes and turns into an orgy of madness and carnage! It all ends predictably enough with Alex wishing that the crate at the docks never being broken, and the opal staying safely hidden within the art work... well until the sequel at least. I was surprised no one wished for a million wishes... amateurs... The cast of this movie is like a "who's who" of the cult horror genre. Robert Englund plays the art dealer, Ted Raimi plays his soon-to-be-dead assistant, Kane Hodder plays a security guard, Tony Todd as yet another security guard, Reggie Banister as a pharmacist, and Angus Scrimm as the movie's narrator! This, and the really graphic special FX really caught my death inducing eyes, and kept me interested. To see all the cool deaths, rent it yourself, there's too many to try squeezing in here! But, like I said, the ending was predictable. And now, to kill Ted Raimi for real... I like the crate squishing idea.... heh heh.
