Step | Action |
1. | Open source image. |
2. | From the layer palette, select Duplicate. |
3. | From this new layer, do the following:

4. | From the layer palette, right-click on the Background image and select Duplicate. |
5. | The middle layer should be the active layer now. |
6. | From the middle layer, do the following:

7. | From the layer palette, select the Top layer and do the following:
|
8. | Select the Retouch tool and select Smudge as the Retouch Mode using the following parameters:

9. | Randomly add smudges to your image in a rough 30 to 45 degree swipe. Note: Vary the size and opacity of the Retouch tool to control your smudge effect. |
10. | From the Effects menu, select Motion Blur, Angle = 222, Intensity = 15 pixels |
11. | From the layer palette, select the Middle layer and set the layer blend mode to Screen.

12. | You can optionally ad the following effects to bring out the sketch even more:
