Hamrun Spartans maintained their premier league status by defeating rivals Marsa 1-0. The Spartans needed only a draw and in fact Marsa were more offensive at the start. They were dangerous especially when Kenneth Abela hit the upright. Hamrun went close on counter attacks first through Stefan Sultana and then as half time approached, Bajada should have scored following a perfect move by Sultana, and a perfect cross from Brincat. The Hamrun youngster however, made up for his mistake as the second half started. He capitalised Vallastro's mistake exchanged the ball with Spiteri, rounded the Marsa keeper, and scored in the empty net, putting the Reds in delirium. Marsa pressured more as the end approached and could have equilised but Casha was in astonishing form and denied them. Then, Hamrun should have definitely wrapped up the encounter in the final minutes, when experienced Degiorgio released Spiteri a couple of times in front of Vallastro. The chances were missed but the result was now achieved. The jubilant Hamrun fans were in celebration as the reds confirmed that they will play in Premier next season, at the expense of rivals Marsa who were relegated. |
