POINT OF INTEREST: Evaluating a city's population
There are 2 main figures for a city's population: the City and the Urban Area. The most used is the City, and this is good for regional and city politics comparaisons. However, the Urban Area is much better in showing the city's population importance on national and international levels.
For instance, Houston is considered to be the 4th largest US city, but it has a land area almost as big as Luxembourg. If Boston had the same land area, it would have a much larger population than Houston. Here are some figures (April 2000) to examine:
