MORRIS -- The Morris City Council took another step Monday in the lengthy rehabilitation of the narrow, potholed Illinois River Bridge. Aldermen approved an intergovernmental agreement with the Illinois Department of Transportation for two facets of the construction project.
The agreement allows for water main construction at Illinois Avenue and new traffic signals along Illinois 47 at Illinois Avenue and Washington Street.Morris' total cost for both improvements will come to about $19,000.
Mayor Dick Kopczick said he hopes the entire project, broken into four parts, will be completed in four to five years.
"Whatever it takes to get that done, we'll do it," he said.
     In other business, the council:
     * Unanimously agreed to change the normal schedule for city council meetings.
Beginning with the next meeting, Aug. 6, meetings now will take place on the first and third Mondays of each month. The instigation for the change came from City Attorney Scott Belt, who had a schedule conflict with the current calendar.
     * Approved hiring Chuck Helston of Hinshaw & Culbertson as an environmental attorney for Morris on retainer. He will assist the city in landfill issues that could come up in the near future, Alderman Brian Feeney said.
