Although it’s hard to believe, there’s a way to sound earnest in asking the question, “Whatever happened to Corey Haim?”
Instead of ransacking the recent past with an irony-laced scythe, Dublin-based The Thrills take the wide-eyed innocence of a California that never really existed and turn it into plaintive, stoop-sitting observations.
Instead of rocking any worlds, the gangly, jangle-y rock tunes seep into the conscience like oranges on the evening sky.
The Thrills
Let's Bottle Bohemia
Hot off the heels of their 2003 debut “So Much for the City,” “Let’s Bottle Bohemia” equates life just outside the spotlight with the uneasy feelings of love. Faded beauty queens, Charles Foster Kane’s Rosebud and Haim himself all make scattershot cameos in the lyrics sheet. And it’s almost too much, bringing to mind the guitar-wielding English majors who wonder why everyone’s having a good time except them.
Then “Not For All the Love in the World” comes along, and lead singer Conor Deasy’s clear-throated croon makes it all worthwhile. Bring on the banjo and, yeah, the non sequitur lyrical phrases are invited, too. The slippery days of early fall need a soundtrack and The Thrills keep trying to provide one.
