Here are a few random observances I jotted down as I watched through my Pirates of the Caribbean DVD. (Plus comments/corrections from a friend or two *grin*)

Scene 1: Opening Credits/A Pirate's Life
-Elizabeth's singing the song FAR too slowly. You could practically dance a minuet to that tune.
(Carmen's explanation: "It kinda adds to the mood...")
-Young Mr. Gibbs looks a lot like Javert. Give 'im a nightstick and Javert hat, and he'd most definitely be the man. Since Marius and Will remind me of each other, that works out.
-Elizabeth looks like she has a tiara on when Mr. Gibbs is accusing her of singing about pirates.
-Norrington has this faraway look on his face when he's talking about making sure the pirates get what they deserve. Then it's as if he realizes Elizabeth is still there and finishes his sentence.
-Then he looks a bit ill when Governor Swann suggests they change the subject.
-As Elizabeth walks her father walk off after the "That's what concerns me" line, she has this very angry rebel face.
-She's also got a strange smile when she sees the parasol floating in the water. Nothing I found particularly charming about that.
(Carmen's explanation: "The look kinda says 'Ohh..look- it's a parasol! Now there's something you don't see every day.')
-Doesn't Will look like he and the raft are just under the water when you first see him?
-Governor Swann is thoroughly disgusted at the sight of that burning ship.
-Mr. Gibbs' line, "Everyone's thinking it, I'm only saying it," comes only a split second after his first line, which makes me think, "Um...but nobody's objected!"
(Carmen's explanation: "He's not saying that nobody's objected to it, he's saying that he's the first one to actually speak his thoughts..as the whole 'pirates caused this' thing is most likely running through everyone's mind.")
-Governor Swann sounds overly concerned when he tells Elizabeth to "Take care of him" ("him" being Will).
-Anybody else thinks that the way Will gasps out his name is a bit odd? And that he's so immediately reassured that an 8-year-old girl is looking after him that he falls back asleep?
-As IF Norrington didn't see her filch the necklace. He was standing practically right behind her when she commented on it.
-Does 18-year-old Elizabeth always keep a lighted candle by her bed? You'd think she'd blow it out when she went to bed.
-What's with the small black medallion-shaped mark underneath the medallion? A hole? A place where there was no dust?
(Carmen's explanation: "It was a dust free area..you'll notice that there's actually quite a bit of dust on the medallion when you see it in the drawer.")
-I almost expect Elizabeth to see a ghostly, bloodied, or fanged vision of herself in the mirror, given the atmosphere of the shot.
-Elizabeth's dressing-gown is just draped over her bed, of course. Even though she was sleeping in said bed just moments before.
-Why does she say "Yes" before she's actually ready for anyone to come in?
-I swear Governor Swann says, "I have gift for you."
-Elizabeth takes approximately 8 seconds to dress into her corset, assuming that she started dressing the instant her clothes were off.
-The maidservants look as pained as Elizabeth as they're helping her put the corset on.
-The servant who passes Will is carrying a teapot or something on a tray. Who exactly is he carrying tea to?
(Carmen's guess: "Elizabeth's mom? Or maybe it's an empty teapot left from breakfast going back to the kitchen..")
-Are there usually tassels on swords? Or is this purely a decorative sword?
-Another tassel thing - Will claims it's perfectly balanced, and my brother pointed out that if Norrington actually wanted to fight the thing and cut the tassels off of it, it probably wouldn't be PERFECTLY balanced anymore...
-When Elizabeth comes down the stairs and sees Will, her hand immediately goes to... her heart? The medallion? Not to mention the blinking goldfish look on Will's face.
-Elizabeth looks a bit desperate when she says her "Call me Elizabeth" line.
-Will looks like he's at least TRYING to smile as he says "As always." But the smile fades away in an instant.
-Then Will looks like he's about to bawl, as Governor Swann takes the sword.
-And THEN, Will looks just a tad bit cross-eyed as he walks out the door, just before he says, "...Elizabeth."

Scene 2: Pirates Ye Be Warned
-Why does that sailor look so shocked when he sees the bucket floating by in the water?
(Carmen's thoughts: "well, like the parasol, it's not something you'd see daily...")
-I love the little boy's eyebrow raise as his master contemplates taking a bribe. Almost as if he's saying, "Well, sir, are you a crook or not?"
-That blue feather in Governor Swann's hat is about as big and fluffy as his wig.
-When Norrington picks up the sword, he gives it this look that makes me think he's trying to decide if it's worthy of him. Apparently he decides it is, because then he lifts it up.
-How does Jack stay upright as he walks down that ramp?
-The soldiers are just standing next to him, not really stopping him from going on the dock. If he really wanted to get on board, all he had to do was keep walking and they'd just be walking alongside him. If they wanted to stop him, the best plan would probably be to step in FRONT of him.
-Jack mentions the fort and one of the soldiers looks out to sea. Is that where the fort is?
-I love the "poor you" look on Jack's face when he says, "...did not merit an invitation."
(Carmen's thoughts: "you can just see him playing the jephordy song in his head.")
-As the soldiers start arguing about the Black Pearl, Jack gets this great look of annoyed impatience on his face.
-When the soldier says, "I think he's telling the truth," Jack frowns, concerned. He must have worried they'd find him out.
-No more romantic place to propose than an armory, surrounded by cannons.
-Norrington tells Elizabeth that she looks lovely, and she responds with, "Yes"? How rude is that? "Yes, I know, don't I?"
(Carmen's thoughts: "I did have a close look at thsi one..it kinda sounds like "yes', but relaly, if you put the subtitles/caption option on, it states that it's only a sharp inhale/gasp type thingy")
(My response to Carmen's thoughts: "Well, then, it LOOKS like she's saying yes. Because she nods.")
-Poor Elizabeth looks like she's retching in the background practically the entire time she's on the top of the wall. Yes, there is a reason for that, but still, it's funny to watch.
-I am dying to know what Jack was telling the soldiers. "And then they made me their chief..." Why is he recounting past experiences?
-Why did the soldiers look so intently at the flag of the ship? Surely they've seen it before. Is there a deep symbolic meaning?
(Carmen's thoughts: "it's relaly that strange wind that has picked up...")

Scene 3: Elizabeth's Rescue
-That's a lot of fish swimming around Jack and Elizabeth...
-What did Jack have his knife out for if he could just tear her corset off?
-Governor Swann's hair cracks me up... Bunches of little rolls...
-Jack winces as if in pain when Norrington looks at the tattoo and says, "Pirate?"
-And then he has this "You're kidding" look when Governor Swann practically sings, "Hang him." Heh...I can just see him: "Hang him...please go on, you enthrall me..."
-What's that black fringe-y stuff around Jack's wrist?
(Carmen's thoughts: "err....maybe it symbolizes something....OHH! it's black, right- it signifies that he used to be captian of the black pearl, lol- just a thought")
-Anyone else really want to smack Norrington when he says that "I half expected it to be made of wood" line?
-The soldier holding Jack's stuff makes funny faces when Norrington re-sheaths Jack's sword.
-Then he looks like he's holding big shoes.
-There's a couple smirking soldiers in the background when Norrington says his "the worst pirate I've ever heard of" line.
-Norrington starts shepherding Jack away and the soldier clutches Jack's things to his chest.
-After Elizabeth gets Jack his stuff and he's holding the gun to her head, she's got this totally noble innocent-girl-going-to-her-head look.
-Note the pouty dude in blue behind Governor Swann.
-Ow. Jack hits his head on the beam when he goes up with that rope.
-WHY is Elizabeth clinging to Norrington and not her father? Maybe I'm a bit confused, but she's not in love with the guy, she doesn't even really like him that much, so why is she clinging onto him for dear life?
(Carmen's thoughts: "because he just happened to catch her and then they were all mesmerized by Jack's crazy escape...Elizabeth also notes in the commentary that she's looking the wrong way...)
-Jack SO looks like he's catching the bullets and throwing them behind him as he runs along the dock.
-You'd think if the blacksmith statue had a real sword, it'd get stolen pretty often. I mean, a sword of that quality would come in handy around there.
-As Jack glances around the blacksmith shop, what appears to be a skinny alligator is lying on the floor.
-Someone could murder that blacksmith and probably no one would know for several days.
-Please tell me Will did not simply throw his coat on the floor. What a slob.
-Where exactly was Jack heading before Will picked up his own sword? Is there a back door? If so, how come Jack knows about it?
(Carmen's thoughts: "possibly the smae door that he was headed to just before he gets knocked out and captured? and if that's the case, he'd have seen it while inside")
-When he's fighting with the red-hot poker, Will looks like he's handling a lightsaber.
-Apparently they can't fight and talk at the same time. The only times they talk are when they pause randomly in the fighting.
-Jack grabs a sword from the machine and then, seconds later, dashes it to the ground. Oh, no, wait, he throws it at Will. Ruling. He should have tried that again.
-Will shows no hint of comprehension on his face when Jack talks about Will already having found a girl. In fact, he looks completely befuddled.
-What is in that bag that Jack squirts in Will's face? Sand? If so, what for?
(Carmen's thoughts: "I always thought it was ashes, but I could be wrong..I mean, it's right next to the fire, and they kinda looked greyish and ashish...")
(My response to Carmen's thoughts: "They bag their ashes? And I have a friend named Ashish...")
-Why did Jack wait so long to "cheat"? Was he simply enjoying the game?
-Why is Will holding out his hand in that strange way as he shouts "No"?
-Okay, it hurts me to admit it, but I do have to say, that's a great (almost expressive!) look on Will's face after Mr. Brown says that bit about "just doing my civic duty, sir".

Scene 4: The Black Pearl
-How come Jack is all by himself in a cell?
(Carmen's thoughts: "Why, he's a dangerous criminal, of course.")
-Elizabeth hadn't touched the medallion in long enough that dust could form over it, and now she's wearing it nonstop, even to bed? Why?
(Carmen's thoughts: "I had always thought that perhaps she didn't have enough time to take it off without it being noticed....she seems to be trying to keep it hidden after all.")
(My response to Carmen's thoughts: "But she had time in between the time the maid left and the time the pirates showed up. But she decided to wear it to bed anyways. Sheesh.")
-What IS Will looking for when he opens the window? Must be that creaking and wind howling that the subtitles claim is there - I couldn't hear it.
-Governor Swann looks like he's trying not to laugh after he says the bit about Elizabeth having a trying day. In fact, he always looks like he's got something up his sleeve, when he really doesn't.
-And that's almost a Torg-like "What's that?" look.
-Jack's teeth glow in the dark when he says, "Then where do the stories come from, I wonder?"
(Carmen's thoughts: "Isn't it simply the lighting?")
(My response to Carmen's thoughts: "No, his teeth really are glowing when he does that little grin.")
-On first sighting of Eyeball Guy (his name escapes me at the moment), he's doing something with his eye...and a knife. Sharpening it?!
(Carmen's thoughts: "I believe he's making the hole that's supposed to represent the pupil bigger.")
-That's the third flailing body I've seen. These bodies jump out of nowhere, flailing their arms and legs.
-Governor Swann looks very hurt when Norrington tells him to barricade himself wherever. Almost like he's saying, "What? You don't want me to help?"
-Wait! If the pirates can't feel anything, why is Eyeball Guy hurt by the coals?
-Sheesh. Elizabeth's hair is almost as pompous as her father's when she asks for parley.
-Why is there a lit candle in that closet?

Scene 5: Welcome Aboard
-Why did Jack choose that moment to insult the dog? He should have been happy with it, as it was steadily advancing toward him.
-These guys at the prison must lose the keys to the cells a LOT, with the dog in possession of them.
-That would be REALLY gross, being grabbed by a decaying half-skeletal hand.
-Why weren't more pirates turning into skeleton as they were fighting outside, presumably in the moonlight?
-"Aye, sir," followed by the angry wrenching away of the hand... that doesn't sound like too much real respect toward ol' Barbossa.
-Note the sounds that resemble heartbeats when Elizabeth plans to drop the medallion overboard.
-Apparently Eyeball Guy didn't make the connection between "Turner" and Bootstrap Bill until his friend pointed it out.
-Barbossa's eyes do something freaky when he says "guidelines."
