James Gostelow 1825 - 1900 |
In 1743 DANIEL GOSTELOW (1721-1789) married JANE OSBORN at Castlethorpe. They began a dynasty that was to stay in the Hanslope/Castlethorpe until the 1950's. Daniel may have lived in the area before his wedding as his aunt ANN GOSTELOW had married a yeoman farmer from Hanslope, WILLIAM PLOWMAN at her home village of Paulersbury, Northants in 1705. Daniel and Jane had at least seven children. The first being a girl named ANN. The eldest son was named after Daniel's father THOMAS, the eldest son of JOHN GOSTELOW of Paulersbury (1658- 1719), who after the death of his first wife, moved to Blisworth. THOMAS GOSTELOW, son of Daniel ( born 1750) married SARAH JOHNSON in 1775 at Castlethorpe. They also had seven children, the eldest being THOMAS born 1773 and the youngest , named after his grandfather, was DANIEL ( 1792- 1866). DANIEL married CATHERINE EMMERTON at Castlethorpe in 1811. They had six children , the eldest being JOSEPH born 1814. This introduced a new name into the family and was probably the name of Catherine's father. It has been carried on through the generations by the descendants of Joseph's brother JAMES born 1825 (see photograph) The youngest child was HENRY born 1827 who married MARY BILLINGHAM in 1853. Mary gave birth to two boys, GEORGE in 1854 and FREDERICK in 1856. Mary died in 1859 and the boys went to live with their aunt JANE who had married DAVID FAWSON, a baker from Hanslope. Living next door to the Fawsons at the High Street, Hanslope were the NICHOLLS family. They also had a son called Frederick - the same age as Frederick Gostelow , but more to the point they had a daughter JANE NICHOLLS, just two years younger. FREDERICK GOSTELOW married JANE NICHOLLS in 1876 and they had a son HARRY, born 1877. Unfortunately tragedy struck once more and Jane died of appendicitis in 1879. Harry was raised by his maternal grandmother until the remarriage of his father in 1883 to CLARA EAKINS at New Bradwell, Wolverton, Bucks. As with many families, by this time the men had turned to industry or the railways for employment. HARRY GOSTELOW , born 1877 - died Portsmouth 1964 was my grandfather. |
