What is Mad Cow Disease and Where is it Found? Mad cow disease is Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE). It comes from feed that is laced with sheep parts for extra potein. The disease slowly eats away at the brain ow the cow causing it to become "Mad." The cow will act strange and become unstable and lose its balance until it dies. Humans contract the disease by eating meat from cows infected with BSE. The disease is called Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). The average age for naturally occurring CJD is 56. It much lower when it comes from BSE infected beef. For the scientists among us, both CJD and BSE are spongiform diseases. A prion infects the animal and whe the animal dies the brain will have undergone transformation into somthing resembling a sponge. Some other spongiform diseases are scrapie (Sheep), Gerstmann-Strayussler-Scheinker (Humans), and Transmissible Mink Encephalopathy (Mink). All of the 15 European Union countries excluding Sweden has had one or more cases of BSE. Mad cow disease is most commonly heard about from England (SEE The Moos). Recently Japan has had its first couple of scares drivng beef business down. (SEE The Moos). This has caused a trading fiasco for Europe and Japan. Many countries are refusing to import foreign beef. The French are constantly deeming British beef unsafe while the Brits stuff themselves silly to prove that it's harmless. I don't think that the French will ever agree with the British... |
